Callahan trip for training of priests, not latest scandal

The head of the La Crosse Diocese is headed to Ireland, where a recently leaked letter implies that bishops were warned not to report suspected cases of clergy sex abuse to police. But Bishop William Callahan won’t be dealing directly with the scandal. He’s making the trip as part of a team that will focus on the selection, formation and training of priests “to ensure that priestly formation is properly performed,” according to a statement released Wednesday by the La Crosse Diocese.

Callahan is part of a seven-member seminary visitation team headed by Archbishop Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York. The team will visit Maynooth, St. Malachy’s in Belfast, the Irish College in Rome, The Milltown Institute and All Hallows in Dublin from Jan. 31 to Feb. 7.
