Sub Tuum: The Packers Chasuble

I got a chuckle out of this:
Dom Bernard pulled out this chasuble for Mass earlier in the week. A Bears fan, who happened to be at Mass that day accused him of wearing a "Packers chasuble." (Yes, a Bears fan was at Mass. Remember: a monastery is supposed to be a place where people can come to find solace.)

I have to admit, that it does look like a Packers chasuble. The colors are about right and the orphreys do seem to be covered with footballs.

Praying for the outcome of sporting events is a questionable undertaking, but, as the Bishop of Green Bay, a bishop of our province, has entered to a ... let's call it a business agreement ... with his brother in Pittsburgh, it seems that it might be reasonable to pray for the Bishop's success in his venture.

Some of you, probably Steelers fans and other forms of football modernists, will no doubt counter that Our Lord does not have a favorite football team and that we therefore have the freedom of conscience to cheer for whomever we choose. That's probably true, but I'm betting that Our Lady backs Green Bay. After all, we're always more likely to root for places we've visited.
Sub Tuum

That's one point I thought was interesting.  Bp Ricken approves the apparitions and the Packers win the Super Bowl that same season???  I mean, I'm kind of serious here, now that more people will be going to watch preseason(if there is a season next year), will some also take the time to visit the Shrine?  Cause I know I am.

Heh,heh. Our pastor does take liberties with the rubrics - wearing the stole outside the chasuble being one. I did note to my wife that on the Sunday he was wearing a yellow-ish stole over the chasuble and it could be taken for 'Packer colors'...

However, as it was not unique to that Sunday, I'm sure it never entered his mind - as it did mine!

On the day the Packers played the Bears, one of the Ushers was wearing a Bears jacket (the only one in church...). He took some good-natured ribbing from other members of the congregation - especially the elderly lady in a Packer jacket sitting behind him!

I did like the comment about the Bears fan 'seeking solace' at a monsatery...
