Bp. Hying dedicates “Rachel Weeping For Her Children” statue

CAMBRIDGE — A statue commissioned for an Arapahoe church has made its way to private gardens and churchyards across the country — and even up to Canada.

Cambridge sculptor Sondra Jonson created 12 castings of the bronze statue “Rachel Weeping For Her Children,” which has been permanently installed at the Lady of Fatima Shrine in Arapahoe since 1999. Since then, 10 castings of the statue have been sold to people or organizations in Kentucky, South Dakota, New York, Ohio and Calgary, Canada.

“They’re like my children,” Jonson said. “They’re all over the country.”

In July, one of the castings was dedicated at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Cedarburg, Wis., by Bishop Donald Hying of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

“That was kind of cool,” Jonson said. “(The bishop) was really nice, really friendly.”

Ok, I will add him, but I'm not being nosy just for the record. :) Yes, I thought it was funny the way they worded that.
