La Crosse diocesan priest and Sparta native ordained bishop in Bolivia

La Crosse diocesan priest Robert Flock spoke of his parents’ loving influence after he was ordained an auxiliary bishop of the Cochabamba Archdiocese Thursday.

“I thought of my mother, Ramona, and father, Sylvester, who gifted me with faith and an example of sacrifice and love,” said Flock, a 56-year-old native of Sparta.

La Crosse Bishop William P. Callahan and seven La Crosse diocesan priests, as well as five of Flock’s 10 siblings, were among the 1,700 people attending his elevation to bishop at San Sebastian Cathedral.

“Bishop Flock has been an inspiration to me,” Callahan said. “His work in South America demonstrates the universal church. His work with the poorest of the poor is what Jesus asked us to do.

“I have lost a great priest, but the church has gained an outstanding bishop,” Callahan said.
