Milwaukee priest comes out as gay in NCReporter, Listecki aptly sidesteps in statement

The Rev. Gregory Greiten told his congregation Sunday, "I am Greg. I am a Roman Catholic priest. And, yes, I am gay!"  [Why do I suspect everyone that knew him just said aloud, "No Kidding"]

The priest in the Milwaukee Archdiocese serves as the pastor of St. Bernadette Parish. On Monday, he came out to the rest of the world with an article in the National Catholic Reporter. He received a standing ovation from his parishioners when he made his announcement before the article's publication.  [Gasp, liturgical clapping!!]
...
In announcing his identity as a gay man, Greiten chastised the Catholic Church for its stance on homosexuality.  ["No Kidding"]
...
In a statement on Monday, Listecki backed Greiten's decision to share his sexuality with his parish.

"We support Father Greiten in his own, personal journey and telling his story of coming to understand and live with his sexual orientation. As the Church teaches, those with same-sex attraction must be treated with understanding and compassion. As priests who have made a promise to celibacy, we know that every week there are people in our pews who struggle with the question of homosexuality," Listecki said in the statement.

Meh.  In further news without even checking Twitter, Fr. Jazzy Martin fully endorses, everybody says Church needs to change teaching, yada yada, parishioners buy rainbow vestments for when he performs same sex marriage ceremonies, etc. etc., Father immediately named President of Marquette University after realizing current president isn't gay bladi blah some years later Father leads Buddhist retreats for LCWR.  Did I miss anything?

I think Abp. Listecki's reply is pretty good.  JS says he "backed" the decision which he obviously doesn't but whatever.

The most appalling thing here is the [sinister music plays] liturgical clapping.  Really folks, it's the sacrifice on calvary, can't we find a more liturgically appropriate way for priests to come out of the closet??  One that involves the locally grown Giant Liturgical Puppets?

Update: Just to be clear, I'm being a bit facetious about the whole liturgical clapping.  Clearly, there should not be a Rite of Dedication to Fabulous-ity introduced, however it is striking that in a very Lord of the World way, they are already trying this stuff.

What's strange about this is that a grown man thought it appropriate to give such a self-referential speech at his church, and write about it for the National Catholic Reporter. Smacks of narcissism. Priests: Offer the sacraments, preach solidly (rooted in Church Fathers), strengthen the faithful in this time of moral relativism, and pray...a lot. Beyond that, keep the personal stuff to yourself and your spiritual director.

If there was a LIKE button for your reply, Anonymous, I'd hit it! Spot on. Mass is not the place for such stuff.

Nothing says "Holy Season of Advent" like discussing your preferred sexual practices at Mass.
This nonsense is just one reason why I belong to a F.S.S.P. parish. Not a rainbow in sight .

I'm against it. I wonder if he could have just put a note in the bulletin rather than making the homily about him and the desire to accept gay people? The Archbishop was cordial, but I just don't think making the announcement at Mass is fair to those who could care less, or those who might find it disturbing, but most esp. to those who really want to assist at Mass. The applause after his coming out demonstrates how political the action is. I may be wrong - but I'm sick of this gay b.s. - An article in the NCR and a mention in the bulletin should be more than enough.

Does anyone truly think that there is any surprise here with this Priest's announcement? Does anyone actually think that from the time he entered seminary, to this very day, anyone involved in his formation, didn't know about his sexual preference? The floodgates have been officially opened after Vatican II right up to the flawed and rigged Francis pontificate. Come Lord Jesus!

No, Archbishop Listecki is off base. If he doesn't discipline this priest in some way, he is endorsing this kind of announcement -- and note, Fr. Greiten also criticized the Church's "stance" on homosexuality. And most telling about the moral corruption in the Church is the fact that the congregation gave this poor priest a standing ovation. And as well, how many men who boast about their homosexuality are not engaged in homosexual activities? Very disappointed in Archbishop Jerry Listecki.

There are plenty more where he came from, but they have common sense and common courtesy.

And this "clappy clappy" at Mass stuff is widespread, mostly because PRIESTS don't understand the Mass or have liturgical sensibility.

Well, maybe, Fred. Looks to me that there are two FAR more culpable people than +Listecki:

With support from the director of spiritual formation at the seminary as well as my own spiritual director, both of whom assured me everything was going to be OK, I moved forward with ordination to the priesthood and with my ministry in the church.

Yes. He told those two that he was a homosexual, and.....now he's a priest! They knew the mind of JPII, who had already made clear that people with homosexual tendencies should NOT be ordained.

Why would anyone clap their hands about it?? Shows you how sick this Country has become with all this Political Correctness crap which is nothing more than brain washing.

Very disturbing new.
I wonder if he is observing his vows: Poverty and chastity.
If this continues, I will leave the Catholic Church.
The devil is on earth.

I am adding to my note. Archbishop Listecki is quoted: "As the Church teaches, those with same-sex attraction must be treated with understanding and compassion." Comment: those with same sex attraction deserve no more understanding and compassion that any others. And when they are proud of their perversion, as this priest apparently is, they deserve less understanding and compassion. Aggressive homosexuality is a scourge on society. Archbishop Listecki needs to look at reality and not parrot the current soft, harmful, apologizing, false Catholic line.

And not a sous LESS. We agree that Fr. G is self-obsessed, which is not a condition unique to him, by the way. As you will note in reading my essay of today (see BC's partial quote and follow the link) I think Fr. G. is not too bright and has been manipulated to the detriment of himself, the Archdiocese, and the Church as a whole.

Too bad.
