Whitefish Bay native appointed dean of Business School at CUA

ST. FRANCIS — Bill Bowman, 67, a Whitefish Bay native, was appointed dean of the Busch School of Business and Economics at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in August. It is the only business school in the United States chartered by the Vatican.

“He is, in essence, the Vatican’s point man on business education in the United States,” said Robert Warren, an accounting professor for the Busch School.

Bowman, who attended the former Henry Clay School, now Whitefish Bay Middle School, and graduated from Whitefish Bay High School in 1967, was a member of St. Monica Parish.

“Whitefish Bay is an idyllic place to grow up,” said Bowman in a Sept. 30 phone interview with the Catholic Herald. “It’s a lovely town and the schools are fantastic. It was challenging academically and the football team was fairly good in those days when I played. All those things provided me with a strong foundation for what came next.”

Bowman studied industrial engineering and management science at Northwestern University and upon graduation worked for the United States Public Health Service in Cincinnati. He also married his high school sweetheart, Leigh (née Daggett), with whom he has nine children.

Cdl. Burke to give lecture at Catholic University of America March 20

Cardinal Raymond Burke will give the 11th Annual James H. Provost Memorial Lecture at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center Great Room on the campus of The Catholic University of America.

Cardinal Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, will speak on “The Relation between the Apostolic Signatura and the Local Church.”

The cardinal studied at The Catholic University of America receiving his B.A. and M.A. in philosophy. He pursued further studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, earning a license and a doctorate in canon law, among other degrees. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1975. Pope John Paul II named him Defender of the Bond of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura in 1989.

He was appointed bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse in 1994, and archbishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis in 2003. In June 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to the position he currently holds in the Apostolic Signatura. In 2010, the Pope elevated him to the College of Cardinals.

Rev. Robert J. Kaslyn, S.J., dean of the School of Canon Law, notes, “The Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura functions as the supreme tribunal in the Church and also ensures that justice in the Church is correctly administered.”

“The exercise and protection of justice is of great importance in the life of the Church, on the diocesan, national, and international levels, and we look forward to a significant talk by an important curial official.”
