Vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan will take the stage on Wednesday evening at the Republican National Convention, bringing his message about the need to drastically shrink the size of the federal government and overhaul the social safety net to a prime-time audience.

The House Budget Committee chairman, who has delivered a much needed shot of energy to the campaign since being named as Mitt Romney's running mate earlier this month, is likely to spell out his vision of the role of government, drawing sharp contrast with that of the Obama administration.

Mr. Ryan is a superstar among conservative activists of the Republican party, but many Democrats were cheered by Mr. Romney's decision to add him to the ticket as they think they can make political gains on the back of Mr. Ryan's plan to radically reduce domestic spending programs.

CCHD funded group praises Obamacare

In Milwaukee, where faith leaders and advocates have held prayer vigils and sent representatives to Washington to lobby for reform, the Rev. Dennis Jacobsen of Incarnation Lutheran Church called Thursday's decision a sacred moment that hit close to home.

"I do have this sense that this was sort of a sacred moment in a secular chamber," Jacobsen, who heads the national clergy caucus for the advocacy group Gamaliel, said of the Supreme Court decision. "I am convinced that health care biblically is God's intent for everyone."

I have heard that the Archdiocese of Milwaukee's CCHD collection was way, way down this year. So if the Archdiocese refuses to cut ties with these groups, the faithful will have to defund them out.

Unfortunately, Wisconsin Alinsky groups were awarded  [PDF] close to $250,000 in the 2011-12 CCHD grants.

PS Also noteworthy in the MJS article is this little line:

"Changes" is a little different than "repeal," no? So I did a little research and found this article from Catholic News Agency:

The [USCCB] said that it did not join in “efforts to repeal the law in its entirety” after it was passed in 2010 and added that “we do not do so today.”

Legal challenge to national prayer day overturned

A federal appeals court on Thursday overturned last year's ruling that the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional, saying the organization that brought the lawsuit did not have legal standing to do so.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered that the lawsuit by Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation be dismissed.

In writing for the majority, Chief Judge Frank H. Easterbrook said it takes an invasion of one's own rights to create standing. He said the annual proclamation only encourages prayer and no one can be injured when a request can be denied.

In a 13-page decision, Easterbrook said that in marking the day each year, the president was making a request for prayer, not a command.

"No one is injured by a request that can be declined," he said.

The Washington-based American Center for Law and Justice, which had filed an amicus brief supporting the government's case, applauded the decision as a "victory for our nation's heritage and history."
