MkeJS interviews Fr. James Martin SJ, asks about being "Late Night" chaplain
The whole thing at Journal SentinelCatholic author and commentator the Rev. James Martin, perhaps the best-known Jesuit after Pope Francis, will return to Milwaukee this weekend for dual engagements at Marquette University.
Martin, whose social media savvy and frequent appearances in print and on television — including Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" — have elevated the church's profile in popular culture, will deliver the commencement address for Marquette's Class of 2014 at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. And at 7 p.m. Friday, Martin will recount the journey to Israel that informed his latest tome, "Jesus: A Pilgrimage," at Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Q: Your frequent visits to "The Colbert Report" earned you the title of "Official Chaplain for the Colbert Nation." Any chance you'll be following him to CBS when he takes over for David Letterman? What's next for you: "Late Night" chaplain?
A: Hah! That's up to him. That's totally up to him and his people. [Hmmmmmm]
I've enjoyed Fr. Martin's appearances on The Colbert Report. I was reminded of this incident, where it seemed like Fr. Martin was riling up support to oppose those mean old Vatican bishops cracking down on the LCWR. But quite frankly, where it seems more and more likely that Catholic persecutions will reemerge in this country, it's nice to see a priest in the public square.

Martin also will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree from the university.
For several years before the election of Pope Francis, Martin, who serves as editor-at-large for the Jesuit magazine America, has promoted the Catholic church as open and welcoming — a faith more focused on the Gospel of Jesus Christ than the dogma of its leaders.
