Abp. Listecki rushed to emergency room after sever allergic reaction, Fr. Luke Strand annoints

Without looking at the newly-purchased bottle of Robitussin, I swallowed a normal dosage. In less than 30 seconds, my mouth and lips started to swell. I quickly grabbed the bottle and discovered that it contained acetaminophen (Tylenol). Of course, I am highly allergic to acetaminophen. For me, it causes anaphylactic shock. I had the presence of mind to swallow two Benadryl, which I hoped would slow down the reaction.

Within seconds, I picked up the phone and called Joanne Merriner, who always cares for the house and the Archbishop. She lives only five minutes away, and now with a rasping voice, I called telling her I was having an allergic reaction and asked her if she would drive me to the emergency room so that I could be treated. She kindly agreed. However, by the time I walked downstairs, I had lost my voice and it became difficult to breathe. Walking into the parking lot, I became disoriented. Using my cell phone, I called 911, and with a barely audible whisper, I asked for emergency aid because I was having a severe allergic reaction. Within two minutes, paramedics arrived, accompanied by an ambulance. They could see I was having a severe allergic reaction.

I felt a bit like Lon Chaney, who portrayed the “Wolfman” in those wonderful horror pictures of the forties. With every second, my features were changing. I expected the paramedics to say, “Does your face hurt you? Well, it’s killing me.” My ears, normally fairly large, now were Vulcan-like (somewhat like the character Mr. Spock on Star Trek). My face was a vibrant red.

Now, I realize that allergic reactions are nothing to joke about and there could have been deadly consequences, but my Guardian Angel was working overtime. The paramedics administered an epinephrine shot countering the deadly effects. Father Luke Strand happened to be on the spot to administer the sacrament of the sick.

I absolutely love how Abp. Listecki can laugh it off and turn it into an entertaining story.  But seriously, prayers for him, he had better not be going anywhere anytime soon.

Third Strand brother ordained to the priesthood in Milwaukee today

While entering into the priesthood is on a decline nationally, one local family is helping reverse that trend in Milwaukee. Three brothers will be ordained priests after Saturday, June 4th -- as the final Strand brother is set to be ordained.

FOX6 News sat down with the brothers to talk about how rare this is -- three priests in one family.

"There's a combination of a very, very deep peace with a lot of excitement," said Vincent Strand.

In less than 24 hours, Vincent Strand will be an ordained priest. Following in not one, but two of his brother's footsteps.

"People are always quite surprised naturally. This is very rare to have three brothers who are all ordained priests," said Father Jacob Strand.

So does anyone know how Fr. Luke Strand is doing?  Josh posted a couple years back that he was going through treatments for colon cancer.

Update:

Prayers Please

For those who do not know, Fr. Luke Strand has been diagnosed with colon cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.  Colon cancer is common in his family so praise God he has been being screened for awhile despite his young age and it looks like it was caught early.

Father Luke is the tireless and incredibly holy Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee as well as a national speaker including for the upcoming Steubenville Young Adult Conference being held in Milwaukee next month.  He also offers spiritual guidance to a number of apostolates throughout the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

He has been featured in a number of news stories of varying interest throughout the country and the world for some trouble caused by a unique mode of transportation, and for the incredible story of being one of three Strand brothers pursuing the priesthood (please keep praying for his broth Vincent who is in seminary for the Jesuits).

Below is from the Facebook thread going around requesting prayers for his healing.  Please note the request for intercession from Sts. John Paul II and Luke.

PLEASE PRAY! Fr. Luke has recently been diagnosed with colon cancer. It was found very early and Fr. Luke will begin all of the necessary treatments, so the prognosis is very hopeful that he will fully recover. He is asking for the intercession of Pope St. John Paul II and St. Luke. Please join us in praying for Fr. Luke's full and speedy return to good health!

"O Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need: We humbly beseech You to behold, visit and relieve your servant Fr. Luke, for whom our prayers are desired. Look upon him with the eyes of Your mercy; comfort him with a sense of Your goodness; preserve him from the temptations of the enemy; and give him patience under his affliction. In Your good time, restore him to health; and grant that he may dwell with You in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

'The State of Vocations in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee' on August 1

Our monthly First Friday Mass and Meeting is August 1, 2014.

This month’s speaker is Fr. Luke Strand, Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Fr. Luke will provide an update on The State of Vocations in the Archdiocese.

Fr. Luke was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in 2009. He was born and raised in Dousman, Wisconsin, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh before entering St. Francis de Sales Seminary. For the past three years Fr. Luke has been serving as an in solidum team member at Holy Family Catholic Community in Fond du Lac. One of his brothers, Fr. Jacob Strand, was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese in May and is continuing his studies in Rome. Another brother, Vincent Strand, S.J., is a regent in the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus.
