The Albert the Great Center, which has held summer programs in Norcia, Italy, for several years, is expanding its offerings by holding a summer theology program in the USA for the first time, in collaboration with The Aquinas Institute for the Study of Sacred Doctrine. The primary focus of this week-long intensive course will be St Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians, supported by St Thomas Aquinas’ superb commentary on the same.

The March for Life in Rome

This year’s March for Life here in Rome was a bit unique. There were a host of conferences during the  weekend beginning on May 3rd and ending with the March itself, on May 4th. The March began  around 9am at the Piazza della Reppublica and it ended at St. Peter’s Square just in time for the Sunday  Regina Caeli and blessing of Pope Francis.

I arrived after attending a Mass celebrated by a good priest friend. I was immediately greeted by many of our lay Italian friends, many of whom are young  married couples with children or are engaged to be married soon. It was great to see them and experience their enthusiasm with regards to right-to-life issues in Italy.  During the March I also was able to greet His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Burke.  Many people were so glad that he came to show his support!

Reflecting on the march, one word comes to mind: beauty. There is something quite beautiful about the right-to-life of every human being that one only needs to take a step back and contemplate for a few moments.

In the Jubilee year 2000 the monks of Norcia breathed new life into the birthplace of St Benedict. Armed with only their faith and zeal they founded a monastic community which has been attracting men from all over the world to follow St. Benedict's ancient Rule. Many of their friends have long wanted an insight into the inner workings of their life and so they have produced this high quality up to date film which shows the monks as they go through the daily ora et labora. The title of the film, "Quaerere Deum", means to Seek God. This is the true calling of all monks, the first and most essential quality of an authentic monastic vocation, as laid out in the Rule of our Holy Father St. Benedict.

Cardinal Burke to speak at Norcia Monks' Gala in Conn.

Each Spring, Fr. Cassian and Fr. Benedict spend a lovely evening with many friends and benefactors at a fine dining experience sponsored by the generous Marchetti family. On Friday, May 9, 2014, we’re pleased to announce that His Eminence, Raymond Cardinal Burke will be the keynote speaker at this annual fundraising dinner, which will take place this year at Waveny House in New Canaan, Connecticut.

MilCatHerald: Beauty and beer: Monks' outreach is part of new evangelization

Even before retired Pope Benedict XVI set up a pontifical council for new evangelization and convoked a world Synod of Bishops on the theme, a new group of Benedictine monks was using Latin and liturgy to reach out to those whose faith was weak or nonexistent.

Now they've added beer to the blend, and people are flocking to the monastery in Norcia, the birthplace of St. Benedict, about 70 miles northeast of Rome in the Umbrian countryside.

But for the 18 members of St. Benedict's monastery, life is still about prayer.

"If the prayer doesn't come first, the beer is going to suffer," said Fr. Benedict Nivakoff, director of the Birra Nursia brewery and subprior of the monastery.

The monks in Norcia initially were known for their liturgical ministry, particularly sharing their chanted prayers in Latin online - http://osbnorcia.org/blog - with people around the world.

But following the Rule of St. Benedict means both prayer and manual labor, with a strong emphasis on the monks earning their own keep.

After just a year of brewing and selling their beer in the monastery gift shop and through restaurants in Norcia, financial self-sufficiency seems within reach, and the monks are talking expansion.

On Monday, March 11, Br. John and Br. Francis delivered several cases of our beer to the cardinal electors who are staying at the Domus Sancta Martha. Its Director, Msgr. Battista Ricca, receives the cases of beer, since the cardinals were busy preparing for the start of the conclave.

It's not every day that Fr. Cassian and some of the monks get a chance to visit the Pope. (And that explains this special edition email!) On Wednesday, August 8th, following the general audience, His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI greeted Fr. Cassian, Br. Francis, Br. Massimiliano, and Br. Fidele, who presented him with some of our beer, Birra Nursia, produced in our brewery in Norcia.
