'Souls need prayer:' Statue at Basilica of St. Josaphat destroyed

One of the statues at Milwaukee's Basilica of St. Josaphat was destroyed over the weekend, the Rev. John Clote said.

"Souls need prayer," he wrote on Twitter with a photo of the statue that was destroyed on Saturday. "Please pray an 'Our Father' for them asking Jesus to shower them with graces for true Conversion.""Souls need prayer," he wrote on Twitter with a photo of the statue that was destroyed on Saturday. JS: Basilica of St. Josaphat begins urgent repairs, $7.5 million campaign

More than a century ago, a thriving Polish church community had the ambition to build a church as beautiful as St. Peter's in Rome but the practical sense to make it out of the used parts of a Chicago post office.

The Basilica of St. Josaphat represents a quintessential Milwaukee story. Today, though, the landmark, one of the most architecturally significant churches in Wisconsin, is showing her age and in need of $7.5 million in repairs.

Some of the restoration work is quite urgent. Some masonry, particularly around the roof ledges, is crumbling. Scaffolding will be erected this week and some work will begin immediately.

The Rev. Michael Glastetter, the Basilica pastor, described the art and architecture of the church as a way to "experience the awesome presence of God" when he announced plans for the renovations during Sunday Mass.

"What we are doing right now is the Band-Aid, emergency work that can't wait for the fundraising to be done," said Susan Rabe, president and CEO of the St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation, adding that entire areas of the masonry have crumbled and fallen away.

CreamCity: Exploring the Crypt at Saint Josaphat

The chapel in the crypt of the Basilica of Saint Josaphat houses some truly beautiful artwork. An encouraging restoration is currently underway, proving that not all modern-day renovations of Catholic churches are disasters. Check out some of the pictures I took.

Arise at the Basilica

The first Arise of 2012-2013 will be at the Basilica of St. Josaphat on Saturday, September 22nd. The evening will run from 7pm -9pm, and include Eucharistic adoration with benediction, confession, fantastic music, and periods of silent prayer.

Our presider for the evening is Fr. Matt Widder. Joining him will be various priests from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Jesuits, and Franciscans, as well as deacons from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. A contingent of seminarians, and various groups of religious sisters from SE Wisconsin are expected as well!

For all four Arise events last year, over 400 people attended each. We're excited to begin a new year, and need your help to make Arise grow even larger this year.

People of ALL AGES are welcome to attend, and childcare is provided.

Please come, and bring a friend!
