St. Paul’s proposes new Catholic Center on campus

..."This is a multi-generational project," added Scott Hackl, the center's director of development. "This is a building that would serve students at the university, Catholic or not, for 100 years."...

...Morlino believes the project is more important than rebuilding St. Raphael Cathedral, the landmark church at 222 W. Main St., built in 1854, that was destroyed by an arson fire on March 14, 2005, and remains an empty lot, diocese spokesman Brent King said.

"The Bishop has said, for us, St. Paul's is a priority even more than the Cathedral because it will assist the students, and the students are the future," King said.

The mayor said St. Paul's hopes to start construction in two years....

...In a February letter to Murphy, Trachtenberg outlined a proposal for a 14-story facility with the first four floors for a chapel and student center, the fifth floor for a refectory and meeting rooms, the sixth through 13th floors for housing, and the top floor for mechanicals, meeting rooms and apartments for resident priests or lecturers.

The apartments would be for university students who, as part of their academic program, agree to take courses and seminars in religious studies, Trachtenberg wrote....

Here's what the current center looks like... yuck!  I'm certain Bp Morlino will make sure it is done in good taste too.  I've seen so many ugly ugly ugly Newman Centers or Chapels.  I'd be nice to see one done well for a change.
