Listecki gives biker blessing at Harley-Davidson

Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki blessed motorcycle riders and their bikes to kick off the summer season Sunday morning.

The biker blessing took place at the Harley Davidson museum.

"Bless the people who made these motor bikes, and protect with this gracious help those who ride these motorbikes," said Archbishop Listecki.

Jimmy Smith shared the road on his Harley up from Racine to the Harley-Davidson Museum.

"It's pretty decent," said Smith, a rider. "The only problem is I hate cars with tinted windows. You can't see the driver you don't know if they see you or not. And that is a problem."

The Archbishop's blessings follow a positive trend for motorcyclists.

The American Motorcyclist Association reports U.S. fatalities are dropped 10 percent last year. It's the first decline in 12 years.

Bikers appreciate the Archbishop's timing.

"No doubt, it's really cool man," said Peter Eide, a Harley rider. "To have someone of that prestige come down and do this for us, that's awesome."

Equally awesome to some is that Archbishop Listecki rode a moped back in the 70s while in Rome.

"You were out in the air and kind of be able to look around and see the beautiful aspects of Rome," said the Archbishop.

Harley officials believe the first official bike blessing, of any kind, dates back to 1941 in Buffalo, N.Y.

Hopefully these blessings can be continued, if Harley doesn't get taxed right out of the state.
