Just so you know: I'm not Catholic. It's true that Catholics (those who accept the teaching of the Church) would agree with the vast majority of what I post. It's also true that I'm a defender of Marquette's rather tattered "Catholic identity." But I happen to be a Protestant.
Thanks for the clarification John. What are your thoughts on the O'Brien hubbub? Is Marquette after all this time really trying to recapture its Catholic Identity?
Well . . . Marquette isn't a single entity.
There is a liberal Provost, who apparently very much wanted O'Brien, and a liberal majority on the Selection Committee. Wild too easily acquiesced in the choice of the Search Committee. They did tell Wild she was a lesbian, but apparently not the full story on her writings.
I've been favorably impressed with Wild's reaction. He has stood firm.
But on the other hand, he should have been a bit proactive and seen that the Search Committee was committed to the Catholic mission.
The gay lobby is well entrenched here. The Campus Ministry is part of it, and so is the Office of Student Development. There is a Gay/Straight Alliance on campus.
If the new president is a liberal, Marquette will cease to be "Catholic" in any way that offends the sensibilities of secular liberals.
(And of course, a lot of people in the Church are fundamentally secular liberals.)
Nice list, thanks for putting it together! Congratulations on the recent appointment of Bishop Callahan to LaCrosse! You're going to love him and we will be missing him terribly! But, thanks for Archbishop Listecki-he's wonderful! I suppose it's an even trade!
Thanks, Matt!
God bless and keep you and your family always in His Most Sacred Heart!
Prayers and blessing! FrJM
Thanks John for the input. I suspected as much with the Search Committee. I don't even see a problem having some liberals or liberal ideas on staff, but if the Search Committee (and much of the institution) has been ordered to subvert the Catholic Identity, it only leave room for a Liberal Identity. I pray for the new president.
Thanks Anne, we appreciate Milwaukee returning the favor! :)
Thank you Father, the same to you!
