Rep. Paul Ryan, R-WI, announced today that he won’t run for the seat held by retiring Sen. Herb Kohl, D-WI. Ryan said he has more impact in the House, where he is Chairman of the Budget Committee. Former Gov. Tommy Thompson, R-WI, is expected to announce a candidacy for the seat. While head of Health and Human Services under President Bush, Thompson supported embryonic-destructive research. In 2007, during a short-lived presidential run, Thompson backed down from his previous support of embryonic-destructive research. At a Republican presidential primary debate held at the Reagan Library on May 3, 2007, Thompson said: “There’s so much research going on, to allow for adult stem cells to become pluripotent, which will have the same characteristics of embryonic stem cells, so you do not have to kill an embryo.”CatholicVote
Do we have to go through this with Tommy again?

I wouldn't trust Thompson. He was always nothing better than a "fair weather friend" to the pro-life movement.
Agreed. And the way he himmed and hawed over running against Feingold was a big distraction overall. I'd rather him not run.
Tommy is the reason we now have the Medicaid Family Planning program in WI, which dumps millions into PP's pocket every year, providing underage girls with birth control behind their parents' backs.
In addition, Tommy's wife was one of the co-founders of the Wisconsin Women's Health Foundation (wwhf.org) which is currently working to keep PPWI funding in the state budget.
Let's be pragmatic here. I'm ready to vote for Thompson.
Where's the pragmatism??? Let somebody else get into the race who will be true to our Catholic ideals!!! Pragmatism has gotten us where we are!
Fr. Klos, with all due respect, if we want to run some of the front-runners through a "Catholic ideals" gauntlet...
JB Van Hollen=Freemason
Mark Neumann=Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Syndod (the one that is loud and proud about their teaching that the Pope is the anti-Christ.)
The nearest thing to a solid Catholic candidate would have been Paul Ryan and he said he's not running.
As I understand it, Thompson is pro-life and has admitted he was wrong before on the stem cells.
Senator Thompson would not doubt vote pro-life on any potential legislation that would actually come to a vote in the senate, and would support the right kind of judges for the Supreme Court.
Anon, I don't agree with your take on Neumann. I'm okay with taking the lesser of two evils, but it's fair to look for the ideal candidate even outside Ryan. Thompson is not a candidate that will carry the Tea Party which makes him less viable. Would I vote for him, sure. But without pro-lifers or tea partiers energized to campaign for him I think it will be slow goings even with his name.
Isn't Mark Neumann a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church (and kind of a big shot amongst them?)
Do some research on that church and how they see the Papacy in relation to the antichrist, see how you like what you turn up.
