Thank you for your contributions to the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development! Your generosity has laid the foundation for important changes in low-income communities all over the United States. [... although none of the money actually goes to low income families] Through CCHD, we manifest Catholic social teaching and carry out Jesus’ mission to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free (cf. Lk 4:18). [... umm, sight to the blind?]Sacred Heart Cathedral, Winona MN
Truth about CCHD
Recent accusations against the Catholic Campaign for Human Development made by the American Life League are unfounded allegations that have been thoroughly investigated by CCHD and the U.S. Catholic Bishops. CCHD relies on the evaluation, approval and monitoring of local bishops and Catholic dioceses regarding groups in their communities, not the distant web-based accusations[That's what the USCCB calls them, I get a kick out of that one] of those with their own ideological and ecclesial agendas. For more information please see the CCHD response available on the USCCB website.
Yikes, ideological and ecclesiastical agendas? I added the link to the USCCB.
It strikes me as odd that the American Life League report showed major problems in CCHD funding and caused an overhaul of the review process, yet any critique is now called an "attack." Didn't American Life League bring about a supposed fix which would be a good thing?
I found an interesting exchange with a blogger friend at Regnum Novum and American Life League.
I can see where there could be merit in some of these community organizations(Saul Alinsky didn't invent them - only how to corrupt good ones), but I don't donate to the CCHD. I would rather my money go directly to a religious order who feeds the poor or works directly on these projects. In my opinion, the bureaucracy of the USCCB tends to make it less effective at these kinds of things.
