+Dolan named cardinal

Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, who has led the Archdiocese of New York for nearly two years, was named a cardinal by the Vatican, the archdiocese announced on Friday.

Archbishop Dolan, who was named to succeed Cardinal Edward M. Egan in February 2009, is set to deliver a mass at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick on Friday morning and was expected to address the announcement.

He said in a statement Friday morning that he was “honored, humbled, and grateful” by his elevation to the top of the church hierarchy, just below the pope, in what is known by many in the church as “getting the red hat,” a reference to the broad-brimmed headgear worn by cardinals.

“It’s as if Pope Benedict is putting the red hat on top of the Empire State Building, or the Statue of Liberty, or on home plate at Yankee Stadium; or on the spires of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral or any of our other parish churches,” he said. He said becoming cardinal was not about himself but “about an affirmation of love from the Pope to a celebrated archdiocese and community.”

A few years ago I read Brian Murphy's book "The New Men." It was about the North American College, the seminarians and Tim Dolan was rector. One of our diocesan priests Fr. Eric Berns was just ordained a deacon and he was also mentioned in the book. I talk to Fr. Berns about the book and he was a little surprise that I mention the book. I told Fr. Berns Brian Murphy should write a sequel to the book. When I found out Archbishop Dolan becoming a cardinal I kept thinking about Brian Murphy's book about the North American College

This is not a good appointment for the Church. Anyone with any knowledge of Archbishop Dolan and his time in Milwaukee, knows that he was a great protector of the dissenting legacy of his predeccesor, Archbishop Weakland. To this day, most of the admistration of the Archdiocese is from Weakland's time. Dolan allowed Fr. Bryan Massingale to write for the "Catholic" newspaper articles againt the state ammendment that defined marriage as between a man and a woman, permited general absolution to continue in the Archdiocese, did nothing about the "youth minister" at St. Veronica's Parish who was on the national board of Dignity (and living with one of his priests), allowed the recently removed pastor of St. Mary's Parish in Elm Grove to continue working inspite of three complaints against him, has allowed a priest of the Archdiocese to continue working even though he has attempted "marriage" who a woman who was married and had three children, and on and on it goes.
