“Living Our Faith with Archbishop Listecki” Returns Feb. 4 at Old St. Mary's
"Living Our Faith with Archbishop Listecki" returns Saturday, February 4, 2012 at noon. Sponsored by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and presented by Catholic Financial Life, this 30-minute program will air on WISN TV, Channel 12.
Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki will host the show with Bob Dolan. New this year, each program will be taped on location at a different site throughout the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Also new this year is a faith and culture segment where the archbishop will share his thoughts on things like sports, movies, television and more. Each episode will include a closing reflection given by Archbishop Listecki.
Taped on location at Old St. Mary, Milwaukee, where the most Catholic marriage ceremonies took place during 2010-2011, the Feb. 4th episode will look at the topic of marriage – how the Catholic Church defines it, and national and local Catholic initiatives that support marriage.

This is something the Church really really needs to think about. Why do young couples want to get married in these old church buildings with very traditional interior design and exterior architecture?
Old St. Mary's is a rather small parish, especially when compared with a lot of the suburban ones but it has so many more marriages than the rest.
Places like St. Theresa's in Eagle, where a small faction seems in quite a rush to abandon the beautiful 19th century cream-city-brick victorian Gothic counter-church on a hill overlooking mainstreat and build some sort of round post-modern structure on the outskirts of town, should keep the facts about Old St. Mary's in mind.
For better or worse the Church has to compete here. Young people today have weddings on beaches, in parks, at home, etc. A lot of young people were never introduced to the "truth" element of our faith, but no one can escape the elementof "beauty." People vote with their feet.
A nominal-occasionaly practicing-not well catechised young Catholic can see a Church like old St. Mary's and think, there is something lovely, special and sacred about this place. I want my marriage to also be lovely, special and sacred. Even if the initial motive is something so base as "this church would make for good wedding photos" it is a start!
Likewise if they are presented with a fan-shaped audatorium style room with maroon carpet, some burlap banners (which look like they were made by children but were actually rather expensive) with words like "PEACE" and "SOCIAL JUSTICE" and some sort of card-table altar they might as well think, 'why bother with this, let's just get married in Cancun on the beach?"
This goes beyond weddings too. What kind of tourist would think to go to Paris or Koln and not visit the cathedrals there? What kind of tourist would go to LA and even think of visiting the cathedral there?
Prediction, the spirit of Vatican II types that train-wrecked the institutional church know that they have about 10-15 years to go before they become irrelevent. They will do their best to squander remaining financil resources on further wreckovations. Much like how in Weakland's finnal years he so forcefully re-did the interior of Milwaukee's Cathedral, knowing full well his succesor would never have gone that route.
