Listecki: Brewers fans, attend church and avoid brats on Good Friday/Opening Day

With the Brewers' opening day for 2012 coming on Good Friday, Catholics who choose to observe abstinence from meat and poultry might be wondering if the Milwaukee Archbishop would give special dispensation for a bratwurst or two at Miller Park.

Archbishop Jerome Listecki says that on what the Catholic Church considers one of its holiest days, even Brewers fans caught up in Opening Day spirit still need to abstain from meat and poultry, and still should come to a service before or after the opener against the Cardinals.

"I enjoy a brat at the ballpark as much as anybody and since Opening Day is against the St. Louis Cardinals, one might think that the painful reminder of the Brewers loss to the Cards in last year's NLCS is penance enough, but, unfortunately, that's not the way it works," said Listecki. [LOL!]

"Good Friday is one of the most solemn days of the Church year, and with a 3:05 p.m. opening pitch, Catholics have plenty of time to attend Good Friday services at their parish before heading to the ballpark or attend services after the game."  [Strange that MLB would set it up that way]

When it comes specifically to bratwursts, hot dogs, and other meat products like those that inspired the Racing Sausages, Listecki told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jay Sorgi in a statement, "Let's just say that's why God created the 3-game series." [ROFL!]

"I'm sure (the Brewers) will make sure there are plenty of fish fries available at the concession stands. As much as we love the Brewers, unlike Jesus, they didn't die for your sins."

Great interview!

Notice the article spoke of "Catholics who choose to observe abstinence from meat and poultry" on Good Friday.

Good Friday is one of only two days left of required fast and abstinence here! It's not a choice, it's a matter of grave sin to neglect it. Is it possible that even in the Catholic Midwest (okay, one-third, still, better than anywhere else in the country), no one is aware of Catholic culture anymore? Or is it just that all corporate media outlets are inherently inept? I pray our bishops bring back meatless Fridays year-round.

Nevertheless, I agree with Abp Listecki, the memory of the NLCS loss will be supplemental penance. (Although the Crew will win this time)
