Marquette theology professor Fr. Massingale calls Ryan's proposal "An immoral budget that shuns social justice"

My congressman, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), is subjected to some attempted criticism in an op-ed in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel by the Rev. Bryan N. Massingale and John Gehring. They say,

"Ryan takes his Catholic faith seriously and has defended his policy approach in strong moral terms. But it seems he needs a refresher course in basic Catholic teaching."

This appears to unjustifiably assume that Catholics receive instruction in basic Catholic teaching to refresh. In my 16 years in Catholic schools, before, during, and after the Second Vatican Council, I do not recall any document in the corpus of Catholic social teaching ever being assigned reading. I, for one, would have thought that a better use of time in Freshman Theology at Marquette U than being repeatedly told that someone on the faculty had "proved the Holy Spirit does not exist". But I digress. [ROFL!]

Fr. Massingale supports gay "marriage" which is of course to him, moral.  Funny that those who don't think there is any actual sin somehow find some wiggle room for social program cuts.

Father Massingale is a train wreck, and why he is given free reign in the archdiocese to spout his liberal doctrines is a mystery. Three Milwaukee archbishops have taken a hands off approach to dealing with him and, frankly, it is scandalous. Years back, he penned an editorial against the pro-traditional marriage referendum in WI, which was published in the Journal-Sentinel, and predictably, the archdiocese (under Dolan) did nothing.

Paul Ryan would run circles around Massingale in a debate, but such an event would be a waste of Ryan's time.

The fact that no Bishop will tackle these kinds of problems, problems which they have both the right and the authority to tackle, speaks volumes. Marquette seems to think it is untouchable vis-a-vis Catholic discipline, and for all intents and purposes, it is.

It is because of the cowardice of the local Ordinaries. That Bishop Listecki allows this guy to run off at the mouth on important subjects is not saying much for the Archbishop's leadership qualities.

Massingale's theology might find a place in voodoo teachings (of which he looks like he might be an excellent practitioner) but seems a bit out of place in the Catholic Church.

I applaud Father Bryan's efforts to speak out for the poor. From my 12 years in Catholic schools, the Jesus I was introduced to would have done the same-- despite the fact that the Scribes and Pharisees called him a "radical"... In essence, that is exactly what you folks are accusing him of-- funny how history repeats.
As for the voodoo comment, how racist can you get? Funny that you should keep yourself anonymous... But the KKK also kept their faces covered. I'm disgusted. Jill Kramer, Mpls, MN
