Bp. Hying defends marriage against attacks by Marquette professor

[Marquette "theologian" Dan Maguire:] "The bishops will stand with Dolan and the U.S. Catholic Conference, but on this issue, they are in moral schism since most in the Church have moved on (to) a more humane view on the rights of those whom God has made gay," Maguire wrote in an e-mail to the Daily Beast.

"Most Catholic theologians approve of same-sex marriage and Catholics generally do not differ much from the overall population on this issue."

In response, Bishop Hying retorted "I would disagree with him that the majority of Catholic theologians would say that same-sex marriage is acceptable. I think he would be in the minority."

"Obviously, you'll find Catholics on the street that reflect opinions that are not of the Church. That does not make it right or wrong. Obviously, as Catholics, we believe that our doctrine comes to us as revealed by God. It's not up to a 51 percent majority vote."

It's great to hear a response on this issue!

He is a great young bishop! We are so indebted to the Holy Father for his elevation, and we in metro-Milwaukee need to continue to appreciate his gifts because I don't think he'll be here long before being elevated to an ordinary somewhere.
