Girl Scouts, Milwaukee Archdiocese collaberate while USCCB investigates

Local Girl Scouts and Catholic church leaders said Friday they have a long history of collaborating and have no reason to believe that will change as a result of an investigation by U.S. Catholic bishops into the 2.3 million-member Girl Scouts of the USA.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is looking into the programs and policies of the organization in response to criticism by some that they violate Catholic teaching, according to a letter distributed to bishops in March.

Some conservative critics have accused the Girl Scouts of promoting contraception and abortion - allegations that have been repeated in this year's Republican presidential race and that the organization has roundly denied.

Greg Pokorny, who heads the Archdiocese of Milwaukee's office of Catechesis and Youth Ministry, said he can "count on one hand" the number of complaints or questions he's received. And those that have come through, he said, related to issues circulating on the Internet, rather than concerns about their local troops.

"The majority of contacts we receive are from those who see Girl Scouts as an opportunity to foster faith as part of the overall development of the girls," Pokorny said.

During the height of the CCHD debacle, leaders were blaming the Internet as well.  If the gremlins on the Internet are presenting false information, it should be called out.  But to average folks like me, blaming the Internet sure appears like a nice copout when the status quo is desired.

Ahem....
