Thousands attend Rockford Bishop David Malloy's ordination

ROCKFORD — The crowd at the BMO Harris Bank Center was near capacity Monday afternoon as the Catholic Diocese of Rockford welcomed its ninth bishop, David Malloy.

More than 5,000 people attended the ordination, which featured the elaborate procession of more than 200 clerics who witnessed the installation of the new leader.

Cardinal Francis George, archbishop of Chicago, was the principal presider. Concelebrants included Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, Archbishop Jerome Listecki of Milwaukee and Bishop Thomas Doran, Malloy’s predecessor, who led the Rockford Diocese for 18 years.

“We know, in faith, that good days, as well as challenges, lay ahead of us,” Malloy told attendants from 105 parishes. “That’s the nature of the life of the church and being faithful disciples of Christ. I look forward to getting to know you and your parishes and the life and the faith of this diocese.”

Thousands arrived early to pray the rosary.
