MkeJSMadison - The number of abortions performed in Wisconsin dropped by more than 7% last year.
The Department of Health Services reported Friday that there were 7,249 abortions in 2011. That is down from 7,825 in 2010 for a drop of 7.3%.
It marks the second year in a row that abortions have gone down. Prior to an increase between 2008 and 2009, abortions had dropped for five straight years.
The rate of women aged 15-44 who had an abortion in 2011 was 6.3 per 1,000, down from 6.8 per 1,000 the year before. That is well below the national rate of 16 per 1,000 as of the most recent data available from 2008.
State law requires any facility that provides abortions to report statistics to the state.
The body count is still 7,249. Hopefully this is the high

It should also be stated that this is due to grass roots work by sidewalk counselors, crisis pregnancy centers, 40 Days for Life, and other disdained pro-life practices. Pro-Life Wisconsin is directly involved in the front line work of the pro-life movement in this state. Please consider supporting them with prayers and financially if possible.

Of the 7,019 reported induced abortions among Wisconsin residents in 2011, 76 percent were surgical, 24 percent were chemically induced, and 0.6 percent were surgical procedures following a failed or incomplete chemically induced abortion. In 2010, these proportions were 73 percent, 26 percent, and 0.7 percent, respectively.top photo
Seventy-eight percent of reported induced abortions were obtained by women who had never been married.
Women aged 20-24 accounted for the largest proportion (34 percent) of reported induced abortions in 2011. In 2011, there were 321 induced abortions reported for Wisconsin residents who were minors (less than 18 years of age).
Pro-Life Wisconsin's increased presence in front of Wisconsin’s abortion facilities, whether it’s sidewalk counseling or 40 Days for Life, means that more women are celebrating the births of their children and getting the help they need. Our True to Life media campaign has focused on crisis pregnancy outreach throughout Wisconsin, emphasizing the humanity of the preborn.

I think this is great news, and I want to attribute a lot of it to the pro-life movement, and an increasing willingness of our our own Church (bishops and the younger priests especially) to be more vocal about life issues, likewise I want to think that having more conservative leadership in the state capitol has played a role.
On the other hand, I worry if the increasing prevalence and easily accessibility of the RU-486 and the Plan B pills are just rendering a certain percent of abortions 'invisible'?
Regarding RU-486 -- for (most, if not all) chemical abortions, RU-486 is prescribed. So for the purposes of a body count, when chemical abortions are discussed, that is RU-486 and it is counted in the number of abortions performed. But unfortunately not Plan B nor Ella.
This year's numbers put WI officially at 507,035 abortions, but the state didn't start counting abortions until 1976.
