Wisconsin's swing and not so swing counties

Map of countries voting the same
in last four elections
Democrat Barack Obama carried 23 counties Tuesday that voted for Republican Scott Walker in June.

In June, Republican Walker carried 47 counties that voted for Democrat Obama in 2008.

In 2008, Democrat Obama carried 32 counties that voted for Republican George W. Bush in 2004.

That’s a lot of change.

Parts of Wisconsin appear to be in perpetual partisan motion.

There are nine counties in this state that voted for Bush in 2004, Obama in 2008, Walker in June and Obama on Tuesday.

They include the classic battleground county of Racine, a politically diverse, highly competitive election bellwether with a unique penchant for rejecting and/or recalling incumbent state senators. They include Winnebago in the fiercely contested Fox Valley, site of the closest and costliest state Senate race in Wisconsin this year. And they include rural counties in southwest, central and northern Wisconsin. Among them: Richland County, home to state Sen. Dale Schultz, the closest thing to a swing vote in the Wisconsin Legislature, and the only Republican to vote against Walker’s curbs on public-sector unions.
