Cdl. Dolan: The Ultrasound Generation

As we mark the solemn 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, I would like to address my column this week to our teens and young adults, who I believe will ultimately prevail in restoring a sense of respect for all human life, including the innocent baby in her mother’s womb. Please feel free to share this column with a young adult in your life, or ask them to look for it at www.cny.org.

For much of the 40 years since the Supreme Court’s tragic Roe v. Wade decision ushering in an era of abortion on demand, we in the pro-life community have had little to cheer about. In the battle for hearts and minds, it has at times seemed as though we were losing ground, and fast. We could preach about the sacredness of all human life, about the harm that abortion does to women who are so often coerced by others into doing the unthinkable, and the lifetime of pain and regret so many of them, and the fathers of the aborted baby, face as a result. For a long time we were overwhelmed by even louder voices proclaiming “choice” to be the ultimate right. For too many of my generation, that argument was effective and catchy, and there is no changing their minds.

This civil rights issue of our time—the right to life of the innocent baby in the womb—won’t be won by the older generation; it will be won by the young. It is to you that I address this message on this solemn anniversary.

Excellent thoughts, Your Eminence.

Now...please tell me why you wined and dined the bloodthirsty sadist in the White House at the Al Smith Dinner, just prior to the election, thus helping to ensure the victory of this assassin. I guess I'm having trouble following your logic, Eminence.

I have trouble following his "logic" as well. Why did he allow the pro-abortion mayor of Milwaukee and his wife to be co-chairs of a fund appeal for the Cathedral in Milwaukee? Dolan is always on every side of an issue.

And these are his words at the nomination of the pro-abortion Judge Sonia Sotomayer:

The Puerto Rican community rejoices with our own Justice Sonia Sotomayor," Dolan wrote in an August column. "All of us in Catholic New York should."

The new justice "studied hard at Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and Cardinal Spellman High School," he said. "Her dear mother sacrificed to send her there, and her own beautiful Catholic faith gave our new Supreme Court justice the character, values and morals she holds close."

"You need to proclaim it. It can’t come from me or from people my age; our time is rapidly passing. Now is your time."

Gee, thanks Dolan. Having failed to fulfill your office, you're just going to continue to kick the can down the road. If you think you really think someone else has to do the job, why not just resign? Oh, yeah, then no photo-ops, no visits to the White House....

I'm with everyone here. He is a diplomat serving two Masters. You would really think he would really really know better.

Where are the Dolan apologists?

Is there no one to offer a defense of the indefensible?

Like it or not, Cdl. Dolan is a leader in the pro-life community. If you bash him when he makes mistakes, shouldn't you praise him when he does the right thing?

It is absolutely unbelievable how some of the lay "faithful" seem to think they possess more wisdom than a successor to the Apostles such as His Eminence. Never once has ++Dolan's faithfulness to Mother Church and the Holy Father been breached. He is simply the loudest and most effective voice on the controversial issues regarding Church Doctrine and public policy.

Did you expect the good Cardinal to cross words with President Obama at an event that had nothing to do with the election and the upholding of the natural law in the face of public policy? Would you rather he dump his drink on Obama and call him an infidel? Lord have mercy on all of you for such insolence.

When the matter(s) have been the relevant topic of discussion -- i.e. right place, right time -- His Eminence has always been the voice that leads the charge. I am sure that the bountiful amounts of grace bestowed upon him by the Holy Spirit at his Episcopal Consecration have provided abundantly for him, inspiring him to, in prudence, know wisely when to be wise as a serpent and when to be innocent as a dove. Shame on you for thinking you could manage the most prominent Episcopal position in the nation better than he.

Dolan for Pope.

St. John Chrysostom said, "The floor of hell is paved with the skulls of bishops." That abortion became the law of the land with hardly a peep from the majority of our bishops and has continued for 40 years is sickening and disgraceful. Yes, there are good and holy faithful bishops who have been in the trenches all these years--speaking out loudly, have refused Communion to pro-abort legislators and have ex-communicated Catholic-in-name-only members of anti-Catholic groups, but Dolan isn't one of them.

Okay, again I'm going to make the point that the Cardinal does the right thing here in this article. It's certainly fair to mention the Al Smith dinner and other ways he is failing the pro-life movement, but let's not bang the all bishops go to hell drum.

No Badger, he does not do the right thing. As I said above, he passes the buck to the new generation. "...It can’t come from me or from people my age;..."
Bullshit. Absolute, cowardly bullshit.
(and as for style, the "You have seen, and you believe." mantra is a pathetic ripoff of MLK.)

And to top it off he makes it *harder* for the new generation to do it by providing publicity cover for the likes of Cuomo. Read his Roe anniversary post http://blog.archny.org/index.php/jesus-his-church-and-the-uns/ and see the tribute he pays Cuomo.

@BillT, I can't tell if what you wrote was a serious defense or a parody. For the record, I *DO* think I could do a better job. I also think Matt and Steve and virtually anyone with an ounce of zealousness for the house of the Lord and the salvation of souls could do a better job. I think doing worse would be difficult, notwithstanding Bernardin.

As for those graces at consecration, they certainly *are* powerful graces, but a bishop has to be in a state of grace for them to be operative. I can make a *very* solid case based on ++Burke's article on CIC 915, that any bishop that refuses to enforce it, or leads his communion ministers to believe that they should not, is participating in mortal sin by profaning the sacrament. As successors of the Apostles they cannot appeal to invincible ignorance to escape culpability. Because of the need for purpose of amendment to make confession valid, such a bishop would need to publicly correct his stance to return to a state of grace.

I've done all I can for you folks. I'm leaving the blog. I hope your faith is placed in the Church and not these men or otherwise as the scandals increase over the next few years you'll lose your faith.

What I said was 100% sincere. The fact that you, presumably a woman--Cassandra--think you could do a BETTER JOB AT BEING A BISHOP proves you are nothing more than an apostate. You, as a woman, could not ever be a bishop nor could you ever receive the Sacramental Grace of Holy Orders. Thus, by saying you could be a better Bishop, you are in fact implying that you yourself could do better than the Grace of the Holy Spirit. That is blasphemy--and blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which is of course an unforgivable sin.

Furthermore, while I am in no way doubting the value of Canon Law, Canon Law is a discipline of the Church, whereas Sacramental Theology--the very nature of the Sacraments as the efficacious fountains of the Grace of the Holy Spirit--is a matter considered DE FIDE.

You are an embarrassment to this blog and the Church.
