Blackmail in the Vatican and the Pope's resignation

Today a veil of secrecy was shredded in this eternal city.

Today therefore marked the beginning of a difficult, important struggle for the purification of the government of the Church desired for so many years by Joseph Ratzinger.

We were given a glimpse today into some of the reasons, previously unknown, that prompted Pope Benedict XVI to announce his resignation on February 11, to take effect February 28, in seven days, reasons that apparently “overwhelmed his spirit within him” and “made his heart desolate.”

It is a story that in many ways seems the plot of a novel.

It is a story of blackmail and betrayal at the highest levels of the Church, and, allegedly, of a homosexual lobby organized within the Vatican to influence and obtain important decisions.

To recount this story, I will simply set forth how I learned about it, in the course of an ordinary day in Rome.

For me, this article was hard to read. The job of the next Holy Father is huge to say the least. Many prayers are needed for the next Pope.

Who has contiued to protect Archbishop Weakland and Bishop Sklba? Why do they and their minions contiue to run the Archdiocese of Milwaukee? Who in the Vatican continues to protect them?

Dr. Moynihan has added more on the subject: http://moynihanreport.itvworking.com/from-the-desk-of/letter-19-stop

Definitely needs to be read if you read the link provided by Badger Catholic.

Essentially he analyzes the Italian press article, "And, if one reads the La Repubblica story a 3rd and 4th time, one finds that there are only four quotations, that is, only four sourced sentences, in the entire article." Upon reviewing those, Dr. Moynihan makes the claim, "[T]his article contains no sourced evidence whatsoever, except for the (alleged) statement of 'a man close to the man who drafted the Report' that 'everything centers on the non-observance of the 6th and 7th commandments.'"

That sentence is the only “semi-sourced” sentence in the entire article.

Everything else is assertion.

Matt, I have to say that I am very disappointed that you have played into the media sensationalism about all of this. As it has often been pointed out, there are no authoritative sources that have been cited regarding any of these claims. While corruption and human weakness certainly exist within the Church, you are doing no one a favor by making posts like this. Indeed, prayers for the Church, for Benedict XVI, for the cardinal-electors, and for our future Holy Father!

I have to agree with the above comment. I was pretty surprised and disappointed that Badger Catholic posted this rather sensationalist, unverified story. It's not professional. You do a lot of great things here, but I'd recommend staying away from this kind of stuff.

Of course we should pray and fast for the pope. But we should also be very, very careful about the stories we cover.

I'm surprised too. I thought this was a nuclear free zone.

Thanks Cheryl, I got a chance to read some of his follow up at the Men's retreat but I wasn't able to post a follow up until I got home. I've trusted Inside the Vatican before, it seems strange that Moynihan had not initially doubted the story more...

I think this is a 100% valid question that people are too polite to ask.
