Roundup: The Statue edition

via The Compass
In an interview, Bishop Ricken said he believes Tassara captured the essence of the apparition of the Blessed Mother as described by Adele Brise. "I'm very pleased," he said. "I think everybody is."
The Compass: New statue unveiled at shrine

From a reader, a note from the .... well now former Chancellor but continuing as Vicar General(I think it's good to keep them separate) Fr. Doerfler.
A response from Fr. Doerfler from the GB Diocese regarding the new Our Lady of Good Help statue:

"On behalf of Bishop Ricken, I wish to acknowledge your email regarding the statue of Our Lady of Good Help. If you have not yet been to the Shrine to see it, I would encourage you to do so. The photograph does not adequately capture the statue. The statue is based upon Adele's description of Our Lady when she appeared to Adele. According to Adele, Mary was "clothed in dazzling white, with a yellow sash about her waist. Her dress fell to her feet in graceful folds. She had a crown of stars around her head, and her long golden wavy hair fell loosely over her shoulders." Personally, I find the statue to be quite beautiful and inspiring. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John Doerfler"

My friend received the same response. There's also been an intimation that the picture on the badgercatholic blog is not a good representation of the statue because of the flash photo. I offer for your consideration pictures from the Diocese of Green Bay's newspaper, The Compass.
The pictures of the statue start at about picture 13.

Here's the corresponding article.
For the record, our photo is the photo the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help posted on Facebook following the event.

I still have a strong devotion to Our Lady of Good Help and others that do should not be too discouraged.  If she can overcome the Peshtigo Fire, she can overcome the ugliness of our age.  But the true ugliness of our age is not physical.  When we perceive physical ugliness, we should call to mind the ugliness of our own sins which God must endure.  Let us increase our internal devotion to her and may she reward our devotion with external Earthly and Heavenly beauty.

Our poll How do you rate the new Good Help statue?(10 best 1 worst)

I'll end with this painting that Terry found with Our Lady in "long golden hair."  He posted his comments on the statue at his blog Abbey Roads(I always enjoy even when he's picking on me).

Fox11: Catholic Diocese of Green Bay appoints new chancellor  ... I think it was Fr. Hardon who said that it is preferred to have a priest in the role.... but with priest shortages it's hard to dedicate someone.

Patheos: ‘Apparently,’ there’s a news story about Wisconsin church
Leroy Butler and that gay NBA player that nobody's ever heard of are involved.

I had UX training all week so I feel totally out of the loop.

Taking a trip to Chicago next week with the wife and no kids.  We're both looking forward to it.  Shooting to attend an actual Ascension THURSDAY Mass at St. John Cantius.  That would be a first for me I believe.  We are staying right downtown, see the sights.  Let me know if there's anything else I should go see.  I heard the Cathedral is nothing special, any other churches?  Despite the fact it IS Chicago, I've always loved that city.  When I was young, I wanted to be a cop like my dad but in Chicago.  We used to take a Wrigley trip every year when I was younger.

Warning: a couple of BSes in here.

If you ever want a good place to stay in Chicago, try Benedictine Bed & Breakfast at the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Bridgeport (http://www.chicagomonk.org). The monastery is a solid group, and they celebrate Mass and the Office beautifully. And they're blocks away from US Cellular Field.

Cool, thanks Dave!

If you have time, you could visit the Maria della Strada Chapel on Loyola University's campus. The easiest way is to take the CTA to Loyola.

Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows. http://ols-chicago.org/ Go during the day as the neighborhood is not the safest. Easy access on and off the express way. Near St John Cantius ... St Mary of the Angels, St Stanislaus Kostka, St Hedwig just to name a few. Enjoy your time here.

I used to live in Chicago before I entered my community. You know about Cantius enough said. DO NOT miss out on going to St. Mary of the Angels, one of the most beautiful churches I've ever been in.

I used to work at St. Stans, huge beautiful church and the porter is very friendly and will give a quick tour. St. Hedwig is a pretty church if you have time. There are three basilicas in Chicago if you are up to the task. Miss the Cathedral. If you want deep dish only go to Lou Malnatis and don't forget popcorn at Garrettes's

The Pastoral Center Chapel is actually REALLY beautiful -- St. James Chapel at the Quigley Center? Absolutely worth a stop, and you can get a tour.

I'll reiterate stopping by St. Mary of the Angels, it's stunning and run by the Opus Dei priests. It's our "back up parish" when we don't go to St. John Cantius.

St. Michael's in Old Town is also a stunning church, though the liturgy is often quite lacking. The architecture is worth stopping by for though.

I also know that the Institute of CTK runs a shrine near Hyde Park on the Southside, though I've never been to it. There are also several wonderful theological bookstores in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

I lived in Chicago for several years, and would be happy to direct you further, including great things to enjoy in the "secular" city. I would however have to argue respectfully with Br. David, and I still feel Giordano's tops Lou Malnati's (though you certainly would not go wrong with Lou's!).

Have fun!

Thank you all for the input. Would take any suggestions on the secular places as well. We're planning on the general stuff like the Field Museum, ect, but would love any input.

BTW, we're only going Thursday-Saturday so I'm not sure how much time we'll have, but anything we miss we'll go see next time.

Why don't people like the statue? Seems to have gotten a lot of 0's, 1's, and 2's.
