Saint Agnes parish in St. Paul is disbanding Boy Scout troop

Saint Agnes Scouting Families,

It is with great regret that we must inform you that in response to the recent Boy Scouts of America membership policy change, Pack and Troop 592 will be dissolved effective June 10, 2013. Father Moriarty will include an official announcement in tomorrow's bulletin. On June 3, Pack and Troop 592 leaders will be available to answer questions from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the cafeteria.

On June 10, we will have a final meeting for the Troop and Pack. Our evening will begin with Mass at 5:15 pm and continue with dinner and a closing ceremony in Schuler Hall. All scouts and their families are invited to attend.

The leadership committee has met with Father Moriarty to make a plan to continue to build upon the ideals of Scouting, but with a greater emphasis on our Catholic faith. We look forward to this new opportunity and will need your support.

St. Agnes should consider starting up a Scouts of St. George troop. This is a new organization created by Dr. Taylor Marshall in response to the B.S.A. decision.

Didn't the BSA consider the Catholic Church responding in such a way? A policy change was completely unnecessary. No doubt there have always been "gay" teenagers in scouting, but no one made an issue of it one way or the other. It's a shame that whole scout troops will suffer because of the BSA's policy dealing with a small minority, or in most cases, a non-existent group in many troops.
