Green Bay has state-high 53 school voucher students

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released figures Tuesday showing 53 students are in the Green Bay area are part of the expanded statewide private school voucher program this school year.

Appleton and Green Bay area schools have the highest voucher enrollment with 53 students each. Oshkosh follows with the equivalent of 49 full-time students and Wisconsin Rapids with 43. Manitowoc has 36.

Under state law, 500 students are part of the program this year, and 1,000 next year. The program already existed in Milwaukee County and Racine. As part of the 2013-15 state budget, vouchers were expanded statewide to families who meet certain income restrictions.
