It's Official: Card Burke Removed from Signatura; Now Patron of Sovereign Military Order of Malta

(Vatican Radio) The Holy Father has named Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, until now Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, as Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

At the same time, His Holiness named Archbishop Dominique Mamberti as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura. Archbishop Mamberti had been serving as Secretary for Relations with States.

Finally, the Supreme Pontiff has named as Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, who has been serving as Apostolic Nuncio to Australia.

The writing on the wall would be that Archbishop Mamberti agrees with Pope Francis' plan for a new legal implementation of marriage and Cardinal Wuerl's interpretation of Canon 915.

There is really no precedent for this political retribution which was planned some time ago (and was already in place prior to the Synod on the Family).  Perhaps it was hoped the threat of exile would keep him quiet.

Rome burns.

Praised be Jesus Christ!

This is wonderful news. Of course, one is entitled to feel badly for Cardinal Burke; but, he played with matches and he got burned.

Francis' is a smart pontificate: un pontificato in gamba. And, Cardinal Burke wasn't cut out for it.

His successor seems more promising, however, bringing much more to the table than his predecessor (i.e., Burke): Double doctorates in Canon and Civil Law (to Burke's one), diplomatic field experience across the globe (Burke only brought a battle scar from a row with Sheryl Crow in St. Louis), and - from early reports, anyhow - a new attitude of openness and dialogue (Burke was a stalemate figure, unable to par with theological leading lights like Kasper and Forte).

This is another sign - of course - that Pope Francis wants to return the Church to an earlier golden age, returning to ApostSig's days of multiple doctorate holding prefects with deep diplomatic field experience.

The egg is only on Burke's face. Granted, that goes without saying. Again, he played with matches during a smart pontificate and he got burned. But, others in his shoes - people off'd from ApostSig before the canonical age of retirement, yet still in good health - have been called to ever higher levels of service. Burke's predecessor was called to be the Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome, the archpriest of JLat, and the Grand Chancellor of its U. Burke now does the walk of shame over to MagistralPal - further from the Vat (the Waldensian Church is closer).

Hopefully, cons(ervative) Catholics will learn a lesson here: Shape up, smarten up, or get burned.

I'm so glad you know what the Pope is thinking and doing! A simple search will tell you that the previous Prefects have lasted on average 5 years. The Cardinal had 6. Retribution or rotation?

They were all 66 years old and assigned Patron of the Knights of Malta? His removal is only significant because of his new destination. Nobody bats an eye if he is reassigned back stateside.

Go take a look which offices Agostino Vallini still holds and try again.

It's a pretty convenient interpretation of events to say that the man who both sides of the fence has become the "face of the resistance" to the reforms of Pope Francis is moved to a post outside of any real influence is just a coincidence. You could say Burke deserved it, which perhaps could be considered fair, but to say it is not a move to remove his influence from Vatican affairs is just dishonest.
