From the Chancery

When my kids were young, I once had to disabuse them of the notion that watching The 700 Club fulfilled their Sunday obligation. So don't get any ideas just because Christmas Midnight Mass at the Cathedral to Broadcast LIVE "on WISN, Channel 12 at 12 a.m., December 25." (I can see saying it's literally at Midnight, but I wonder what other date people might think it would be.) ...

Archbishop Listecki posts regarding the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. "I am sure that many find Catholicism strange, wondering why we place so much stock in ancient stories about virgin birth, Immaculate Conception and the need for a Messiah." (To be fair to that many, on the Immaculate Conception they might even include Thomas Aquinas.) ...

December 21, 2014, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM [sic], there will be a Mass and Reception in Honor of Bishop Hying at the Cathedral. (It appears to be an accepted usage, but saying a Mass is in honor of even Bishop Hying seems somehow odd.) ...

The latest Catholic ID video is titled Buried Treasure, on the theme "It's easy to be captivated by earthly treasure, but Jesus holds our pearl of great price." (The number of views at YouTube seems to be trending upward, presumably not just to count Rich Harter's shirts.) ...

In the Milwaukee Catholic Herald

Speaking of Bishop Hying, he has the latest Herald of Hope column, on there being No worries when God's in charge. "Someone did the hard work of counting how many times in the Bible God says to not be afraid; the number is 366, one for each day plus leap year." (So there's the concept: Bishop Hying's Hope-A-Day Calendar.) ...

Fr. Ron Rolheiser's column is on An athlete who played with grace, humility, and we learn why the Herald retitles his column 'In Exile'. "For those of you who aren’t Canadian, perhaps this name might not mean much, but, this past week, Canada lost one of its great cultural icons, Jean Beliveau, a famed athlete. He died and all Canadians, including this Canadian in exile, mourn his passing." ...

Around the Parishes and Schools

Ricardo Torres reports in the Herald on Fr. Arul Ponnaiyan's Immigration frustration: When doing everything right doesn't work while trying to get the proper visa in India so that he could come here to serve at Holy Apostles Church in New Berlin. (Though getting permission from our Archdiocese isn't easy, either, at least as the process was described by Archbishop Dolan.) ...

Maryangela Layman Roman reports in the Herald that It’s hard to say no to top SVdP fundraiser. "[Leona] Katorski, a member of St. John Paul II Parish, Milwaukee, singlehandedly brought in $4,260 this fall and each year, since the event began in 2009, she has brought in nearly $3,000, bringing her total to almost $18,000." ...

Jessica Bell reports in the Herald on an event In memory of Archie: Parish to help in fight against heroin addiction. "As it has for more than two decades, St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish will host its annual concert, but this one will be in memory of a parishioner from neighboring St. Joan of Arc Parish, Nashotah, who died of a heroin overdose earlier this year."

At No Spin Homilies, Father Dan Volkert's for the 3rd Sunday of Advent. "Today, the readings tell us we should rejoice in our union with God and how that union makes us a better people." ...

Weblogs

Since we're good-bying, Anne posts at Imprisoned in my Bones on Advent Retreat with Bishop Donald Hying, who asked, "... In what ways am I still striving to be God, to be at the center of attention, more important than I am? How can this Advent take that desire away from me? Like John the Baptist, we need to say, 'I am not the Christ.'" ...
