Wisconsin Rapids-area man accused of trying to poison Wausau woman to kill unborn baby

WAUSAU - A 32-year-old Wisconsin Rapids-area man was charged Wednesday with trying to kill his unborn baby by poisoning a pregnant woman, according to court records.

Jeffrey S. Smith of Grand Rapids faces charges of attempted first-degree homicide of an unborn baby and delivery of a prescription drug. During an appearance Wednesday afternoon, Marathon County Judge LaMont Jacobson set a $500,000 cash bond for Smith. His next appearance is scheduled for Friday.

According to court documents, a Wausau woman told Smith she was pregnant with his baby in October, but Smith repeatedly told the woman he didn't want anything to do with the child.

Smith and the woman discussed getting an abortion or putting up the baby for adoption, but he became angry when she decided she wanted to keep the child, according to court documents. Police said they saw numerous texts between Smith and the woman in which Smith wrote, "abortion it is" and "It's for the best."
