Former educator for Mosinee, Antigo, La Crosse diocese sentenced in child sex case

WAUSAU - A former Catholic school official who also was superintendent in Antigo pleaded guilty to having sex with a child in Mosinee and was sentenced to less than a year in jail.

Steven Smolek, 60, of La Crosse, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of exposing genitals to a child and to sex with a child 16 or older after he sent sexually explicit messages and had sexual contact with a 16-year-old boy in 2015.
...
Most recently, Smolek worked as the assistant superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of La Crosse for just over a year until he resigned in November 2016 after speaking with police.
...
The victim was not a student of Smolek's, and Smolek has not been accused of inappropriate activity in connection with his jobs.
...
The incident with the 16-year-old boy happened in early 2015 in Smolek's Mosinee apartment, Marathon County Deputy District Attorney Anita Lawrence said in court. Smolek met the teen on a social media app, where he sent the boy explicit photos of himself. Smolek picked up the boy one day and brought him back to his apartment in Mosinee for pizza and a movie, Lawrence said.

Actually, he was in the Catholic Schools office for just under three months.
