Davich: Saying goodbye to a dear friend, a good man, a holy bishop — in that order

The bicycle is an older model Schwinn with flat tires and brakes in need of repair. It’s been in my garage for a couple of years now collecting more dust than miles.

Its owner asked if he could park it there after our last bike ride together, last summer.

“We’ll bike again someday,” he said with a promising smile.

I know him as Don, a close friend who I met in early 2015 when his job got transferred to Northwest Indiana from Wisconsin, where he was born and raised.

You may know him as the Most Reverend Donald Hying, the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Gary. On Nov. 10, 2014, he got a call from Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, apostolic nuncio to the United States, asking if he wanted to think about replacing Bishop Dale Melczek.
