SPJ: Point man one step away from priesthood

Dan Oudenhoven might be following his brother into the priesthood, but the calling was his own, and he is walking his own path to get there.

Oudenhoven, 26, of Stevens Point was ordained as a transitional deacon Saturday night at St. Bronislava Catholic Church in Plover. Being ordained as a deacon is the final major step before becoming a priest. Oudenhoven can now help with baptisms, weddings, funerals and preaching.

Oudenhoven's brother, Tim, was ordained as a priest last year. The brothers attended the same seminary, Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Ill., and both have close ties to the Diocese of La Crosse.But Dan's decision to take a life in the church was all his own.
