Fr. Z appointed president of the Madison Tridentine Mass Society

I asked both Fr Eric Sternberg and Msgr Kevin Holmes, and they confirmed that it’s perfectly public that Fr John Zuhlsdorf has been appointed, by decree of diocesan Vicar General Msgr James Bartylla, as the new President of the Tridentine Mass Society of Madison. Extremely welcome news!

Fr Zuhlsdorf will celebrate the 7am Traditional Latin Mass (Missa Cantata – sung Mass – High Mass) next Sunday November 25 at Holy Redeemer Church, which is part of the Cathedral Parish downtown in Madison, WI, and located on W Johnson half a block north of State Street (click for Google Map). There will be a simple reception in the library downstairs, after Mass.

Come to Mass to worship God. Holy Redeemer Church is beautiful and the sung Latin Mass with its Gregorian Chant is transcendent. Stay if you can, to give Fr Z a warm welcome to Madison!! More than a few locals have long been regular readers or commenters on his popular blog. And warm and vigorous support of Bishop Morlino has long been a recurring theme on Fr Z’s blog, so he has long been especially much a friend of our diocese.

So 7 bells is a bit early coming from La Crosse, I wish I could make it.  I have heard rumors that the group is looking for a more convenient time which could perhaps require a different location.  ....  I don't know where he resides, others do, I don't ask.  Needless to say, I assume it is in the state if this is a weekly visit.  Yes.  We've. Got. Father. Z. But this goes to show that the Diocese of Madison is a leader nationally when it comes to liturgy.  There are not too many Cathedral parishes out there offering the Extraordinary Form.

Yes, it's time he got a job.

(and yes that *was* intended to be snarky--Not a fan of his).

It says it's a private association, so why would there be decree by the Vicar General? I thought maybe ex officio, and so looked on the WI DFI site for the corporate entity, but it's not there. It claims 501c3, but it's not on the 501c3 list at the IRS site. Hmmmmmmmmm.

We who attend that Mass at the Cathedral Parish have no desire for it to cease here in order to move anywhere else, in fact like some others I would probably not be able to attend a TLM further away. But there has not been any decision made of that kind, according to what I am told. The church of Holy Redeemer itself is also very beautiful and the most suitable in the area for the old Mass. Over 90 people attend on a typical Sunday, which is more than attend the EF Mass at St Norbert's, the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest parish out in the country which has the old Mass at 11am Sundays.

The Tridentine Mass Society is a canonical association of the Faithful under the diocese of Madison, if I understand correctly. The priest who is associated with the group is appointed by the diocese. It is a group with so little money that its tax status is kind of moot thus far, lol, I have no idea what its tax status is and there is nothing whatsoever suspicious about this organization which was formed years before Summorum Pontificum by some laity at Holy Redeemer Church who longed to be able to attend the older form of the Mass.

We are happy to have Fr Z, who as I said is a real friend to our diocese and we feel we already know him and certainly love him.

When will the Madison Cathedral be completed? once that has happened it will take some of the pressure off the existing down-town churches in terms of sched.
