Alverno Catholic College closes election day to get Obama re-elected

Milwaukee's Alverno College will be closed on Election Day so that students, faculty and staff can cast their ballots and work at the polls.

"They have no excuse not to vote," Kelly Fay, Public Relations Specialist told the MacIver News Service on October 19th.

Alverno posted a press release on November 1st announcing the decision.

"This is the third time Alverno has offered poll worker training sessions on campus; the first was for the 2008 presidential election. Alverno was also closed on presidential Election Day in November 2008 to encourage all members of the Alverno community to be more involved in the political process," the release reads.

The college recently received a grant to train 200 students as poll workers.

Alverno College is an all-women's Catholic school in Milwaukee with an enrollment of 2,600 students.

TFP (Tradition, Family, Property) Student Action launched the peaceful protest after discovering links to extreme pro-abortion groups including the National Organization for Women, the Center for Reproductive Rights, EMILY's List, and the Feminist Majority Foundation, on the resource page of the Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls.The page also hosts links to Lambda Legal and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), two top homosexualist groups, among other homosexualist advocacy groups.

At least 392 nuns participated in the left’s effort to recall Wisconsin governor Scott Walker. These Catholic gals are supposed to be pro-life and embrace traditional moral values. As a group, they seem intent on replacing the pro-life Walker with a pro-abort/pro-gay marriage secular humanist. I guess the “social justice” sisters support lefty Democrats  because they have confused nanny state socialism with charity.  Leftist claptrap psychobabble (think radical feminism/”gay equality”/moral relativism ETC) likely also holds a lot of appeal to them. Someone please explain to them that  socialism  A) doesn’t work B) involves forcible theft of the fruit of citizens’ labor  B) requires surrendering liberty to secular statist central planners  and  C)  can only be enforced by a tyranny.

Several recaller nuns acted as signature gatherers.  Some acted as witnesses to their own  signatures or signed twice, which is like voting twice. Many are so old that you have to wonder if they were taken advantage of by younger nuns. I bet the old ones also get a lot of “help” filling out absentee ballots.

There are many in the group with important sounding titles.  For example,

Sister  Linda Mershon is the President of  the order Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration (FSPA).   [La Crosse .... this is nothing new]

Sister Celine Goessl not only signed the petition, but acted as a signature gatherer. She is listed as Provincial Superior for the Holy Cross Sisters (USA Province) and as President of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross Corporation.  [Merrill, WI]

Sister Carol Thresher is Provincial Superior of  the Sisters of the Divine Savior (USA Province).  [Wauwatosa, WI]

Sister Regina Pacis Meservey is a member of the Board of Trustees for Alverno College. [Milwaukee]
Sister Joanne Schatzlein is a Trustee of Cardinal Stritch University. [Milwaukee]
Sister Sara Jean Donegan sits on the Corporate Board of Mount Mary College. [Milwaukee]
And no less than four nun recallers sit on the Board of Trustees for Viterbo University: [La Crosse]
Sister Marie DesJarlais, Sister Karen Kappell, Sister Lucy Ann Meyer and Sister Romana Klaubauf.

Why are pro-homosexual clubs allowed to promote anti-Catholic behavior on Catholic campuses?

After examining the official web sites of 244 Catholic universities and colleges in America, TFP Student Action found that 107 – or 43% – recognize student clubs that favor the homosexual agenda.  Many of these clubs promote same-sex “marriage,” open homosexuality in the military, and push for the mainstreaming of unnatural vice.

Here are a few examples:

Saint Norbert College’s Rainbow Alliance promotes anti-Catholic events such as Celebrate Bisexuality Day, National Coming Out Day, Transgender Day, and Gender Bender Dances.

The University of Notre Dame’s Core Council for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Questioning Students promotes a campus wide Day of Silence, and works to implement “educational programming on gay and lesbian issues.

Marquette University, Alverno College, and Mount Mary College are listed as sponsoring the speaking engagement of terrorist Bill Ayers at Stonefly Brewery in Milwaukee. 

The host group Rethink Education is like a socialist/communist/activist movement ostensibly for "better" schools (which I think we all agree we need) but that comes at the price of indoctrination; like what they wrote about a teacher coming out as a lesbian to her students.

It's ironic that Milwaukee Catholic schools are in direct competition with public schools and yet all the Milwaukee Catholic colleges signed on to co-sponsor that event, when Rethinking Schools is anti-private-schools.

One way to get an authentic Catholic education in Wisconsin

I have several friends who are enrolled or have attended Ave Maria University's Institute for Pastoral Theology(IPT).  I have heard many good things about it and friends have recommended I look into the school for myself.  So let's think aloud, shall we?

I like to think back to my college days.  I loved it(well... after the whole dropping out thing my first year and only a community college in La Crosse) and told a friend I could spend my whole life in a university.  In high school I told the school counselor that I wanted to go to the University of Minnesota for astrophysics(Yes, I'm serious.  I still miss studying physics and math).  She laughed at me for a while and basically told me to find something more practical.  Hey, it's not necessarily bad advice.  When my time at WWTC was nearing an end(a great school btw), I even was discerning entrance into the Society of Jesus(until ... you know... I looked into the order).  After I graduated with degrees in computer programming, I thought about a night/weekend approach to getting a bachelor/masters degree and continuing my education.  I haven't done anything in that regard to this point.  One problem is that I have a pretty good understanding of my field, and really I just like learning about history and theology now.  I don't need to sit in a classroom to figure out how data warehousing works since I work with the stuff every day.  So maybe unlike most, I'd like to continue my education not for career reasons, but because I actually love to learn.  Although it is hard to justify spending the money on learning when it won't involve an increase of pay, I'm not opposed to that either.  There's worse things to spend money on.

Whew, okay TMI maybe?  Anywho, I looked into IPT, but the program is for those with bachelor degrees pursuing a masters.  I have nothing but an associates degree(actually multiple associates that overlap).  So unfortunately IPT won't work for me but it may work for you.  I highly recommend looking into the school.  It is a unique opportunity for a state like ours that had no authentically Catholic universities. 

Courses are offered in an intensive weekend format: Friday evening through Sunday afternoon one weekend per month, August through May. You will note that Wisconsin is very blessed to have two locations within driving distance:

They have open weekends where anyone interested can come attend.  I'm sure someone will comment here  when they are, probably no more this year since we are nearing the end of the academic year. 

I've also looked into Viterbo University which has an adult education program, but there's no point in taking any religious classes there.  I wish there was an authentically Catholic university in Wisconsin which I could support.  I hope to see it in my lifetime.  I mean this; I would love to be able to send my children to Marquette.  Unfortunately, it seems clear that Marquette is just not going to reform.  Even if the Jesuits gave it up there's nobody to take over.  The archdiocese wouldn't go in and clean house either.  Best chance for Wisconsin is that a group of faithful lay Catholics get together and either try to bring in an extension of an existing campus(like Ave Maria) or build from the ground up.  I don't hear any of the presidents of the universities doing anything substantial.  By the way, here's our list for Wisconsin, 5 of whom officially support Planned Parenthood.

List of Wisconsin Catholic Colleges that love abortion

Since I'm a bit behind I'll post what Pro-Life Wisconsin found in a recent Newman Society report.

A Catholic university watchdog group has issued the results of an investigation detailing a staggering number of connections between abortion giant Planned Parenthood and Catholic universities in America.
The Cardinal Newman Society stated in its report [PDF]:

The types of relationships between Catholic colleges and universities and Planned Parenthood that this report uncovers are scandalous in that they publicly undermine the Church and her fundamental teachings on the sanctity of life.

The Catholic faithful have a right to expect that those institutions recognized as being Catholic by the Church will uphold Church teachings.

We pray that Catholic colleges and universities will once and for all end the 50 year move toward secularization and embrace their special missions as Catholic institutions, which Pope John Paul II reminded us comes from the heart of the Church—Ex corde Ecclesiae.

Wisconsin colleges on this list:

• The Edgewood College Health Service offers a “sexual health” page that refers students to Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin for “confidential reproductive health and family planning services including pregnancy testing, contraceptive supplies.” The site also refers students to an “emergency contraception” hotline.
• The Counseling Center at Marian University offers links to websites about “Sex” including the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and SmarterSex.org.
• The website of Marquette University Law School includes a “Milwaukee Survival Guide,” which recommends “services” including Planned Parenthood and the National Organization for Women.
• Alverno College congratulated a graduate student for accepting the position of Director of Education at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.
• Cardinal Stritch University helped develop leaders of Latino-serving nonprofit organizations to promote “social change” and improve “the quality of life to the community at large.” The program served a Planned Parenthood employee in 2005 and then two employees of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin in 2007.

In addition to the above, Marquette University has two professors on staff who are Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin board members.

 What is unclear is why these universities are permitted to teach as a Catholic university(I'm lookin at you Marquette).

Milwaukee, WI (LifeNews.com) -- Alverno College in Wisconsin is a Catholic school, but it is coming under fire for violating the pro-life teachings of the Catholic Church and linking students to pro-abortion activist groups. The school has the motto to "change the world" but one organization wants it to change its policies promoting abortion.

TFP Student Action has alerted pro-life advocates to links on the Alverno College web site that channel students to abortion advocacy groups.

More than 15,000 students and parents have politely requested that the Catholic college founded by the School Sisters of St. Francis delete the links, but TFP told LifeNews.com today that the links remain up and running.

The college lists pro-abortion groups like the Center for Reproductive Health, National Organization for Women (NOW), EMILY's List, and many more.

"You can't be a true Catholic and at the same time favor abortion," said TFP Student Action director John Ritchie.

He added, "It betrays the very mission of a Catholic institution. So, we've decided to intensify our prayers and protest until all the pro-abortion links are gone."

One of the groups linked to Alverno College's web site is called Radical Women. This organization bills itself as "a trailblazing socialist feminist organization," and its web site not only promotes communist ideology but also partial birth abortion.

After TFP Student Action started notifying people of the problematic links in June, Alverno College merely removed a few links and posted a disclaimer stating: "The views expressed in these weblinks do not necessarily reflect the views of the Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls."

However, according to TFP spokesman John Ritchie, "the disclaimer is just window dressing."

Ritchie applauded two Catholic institutions, Rosemont College and the University of Detroit Mercy, which recently took down links to pro-abortion groups that were listed on their web sites.

ACTION: Contact Alverno College at http://www.alverno.edu/about_alverno/contact.html to request that links to pro-abortion organizations be removed from its web site.
