Saint Kate: Milwaukee’s newest hotel could have more art than a cathedral

Named for Saint Catherine, the patron saint of artists, the first-of-its-kind hotel in downtown Milwaukee is promoting itself as an experience that celebrates of the arts.

Expected to open in spring 2019, Saint Kate The Arts Hotel, developers hope it will become a place to create discussion and drive collaboration among visitors. Blending exceptional hospitality with artistic expression, the hotel’s motto, “invite participation and expect change,” will challenge visitors to keep an open mind, embrace change, and evolve as individuals.

At an unveiling event held November 12, in collaboration with Milwaukee’s vibrant creative community, over 400 artists witnessed the vision and story of Saint Kate unfold, and learned how they can be a part of the hotel’s dynamic creative process and experiential DNA. Artists were invited to use Saint Kate as a space to share their vision, passion, and imagination with travelers and locals alike.

'We're dads, we're people,' says Milwaukee cop featured in viral photo with 2-year-old boy he rescued

A photo of a 2-year-old boy eating chicken McNuggets on the lap of a Milwaukee police officer had been shared thousands of times on social media by Tuesday.

Officers Vin Paolo and Dan Resnick were called to a vacant, boarded-up home on N. 29th St. near W. Locust St. on Friday morning to assist child welfare workers who had received reports of a pregnant woman living inside, according to Milwaukee police.

The officers found the woman and her 2-year-old son, who was wearing several coats, in the unheated house. They got the hungry boy a meal from McDonald’s and brought him into the warmth of a squad car.

As the boy sat on Paolo's lap, Resnick took a photo and sent it to Paolo's wife because the couple have adopted five foster children.

It was he who sprinkled the tiny menu with references to the history of ideas: a beer called “The Human Condition” (a rich French saison) or “Sustained Thought” — infused with excellent Valentine coffee (a Vliet Street shoutout) and named after a snippet from that brilliant coffee-addicted pervert, Voltaire.

NatReview: The Nihilism in Milwaukee

Tim Pool is a fearless social-media reporter who specializes in getting close to the action. It almost doesn’t qualify as a protest or a riot if Pool isn’t live-streaming from the streets. But he is pulling out of Milwaukee because it is too dangerous for white people.

In a carefully stated YouTube video, Pool described the verbal taunts and threats, as well as actual violence, directed at whites. After an 18-year-old male was shot in the neck and extracted by Milwaukee police in an armored vehicle — Pool identifies the victim as white, although other press reports don’t mention his race — he concluded he had to leave. (For the record, Pool is half Korean — not that rioters care.)

The Milwaukee unrest has taken on a more explicitly racist cast than other riots after officer-involved shootings, in yet another new low for the anti-police movement that has roiled our cities in recent years. After Ferguson, the movement famously adopted the slogan “Hands up, don’t shoot.” If it were to take its next catchphrase from Milwaukee, it might be (per Pool’s reporting) “f*** white people.”

Dems attack Wisconsin School Choice, Milwaukee voucher program

As Republicans consider plans for expanding access to taxpayer-funded, private-school tuition vouchers this year in Wisconsin and other states, a federal lawmaker is calling for a review of the long-standing Milwaukee voucher program.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) has asked the U.S. Government Accountability Office to scrutinize the impact and outcomes of Milwaukee's voucher schools compared with Milwaukee Public Schools in areas such as academic achievement, special-education services and accountability practices.

In a December letter to Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, Pocan indicated a study is appropriate now because voucher and tax-credit scholarship programs have proliferated across the country since 2001, and the Milwaukee voucher program — in place since 1990 — offers years of new data to be examined.

"We'd like to know what the strengths and weaknesses of the program are," Pocan said in an interview."  As other states look at expanding (voucher) programs, it makes sense to have an objective study by a respected, nonpartisan agency."

U.S. Reps. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin and Dave Loebsack of Iowa — both Democrats — signed the letter as well.

I think this is absolutely bizarre.  Gwen Moore honestly thinks shutting down the Milwaukee voucher program is a good idea.  Yeah, yeah, it's a "nonpartisan  study," I'm suuuuuuure it is.

Milwaukee Passes Sweeping Orientation/Gender Identity Non-discrimination Ordinance

Milwaukee County Supervisor Deanna Alexander’s attempted to bring common-sense, safety and freedom protecting amendments to an onerous proposal on a so-called anti-discrimination ordinance up for a vote by the Milwaukee County Board last night. The controversial “Bathroom Bill” guarantees “very broad legal protections for those self-identifying as another gender to have a right to utilize all county facilities.”

Alexander believes the ordinances leave “loopholes that are going to aid sexual predators in hurting our community” and lend protection to “peeping toms and other predators to use LGBT protections as a cover for going into bathrooms they don’t belong.”

Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Action, states, “Unlike the City of Fond du Lac whose officials voted down a similar ordinance late last year, Milwaukee County insists on compromising the safety and the religious freedom of its residents while pandering to a very small minority who insist on special treatment. We need more elected officials like Supervisor Deanna Alexander who stand up for those they represent and for what is right.”

Men's Journal: The Brew City Renaissance

Ever since Polish and German immigrants settled along the Lake Michigan's Wisconsin shore in the early 1800s, Milwaukee has been a city soaked in beer. Locals brew it, celebrate with it, mourn with it, and occasionally drink it during mid-morning work breaks. Thanks to several new efforts to immerse tourists in the longstanding local hops culture, the Brew City is becoming the ultimate destination for hard-drinking history buffs.

The brand new Historic Bar Tour, put on by established local company Milwaukee Food & City Tours, takes visitors on a three-hour bus trip between different pre-Prohibition taverns that serve up local ale and Wisconsin's official-unofficial state cocktail, the Brandy Old Fashioned. Drinkers start at the Landmark 1850 Inn, Milwaukee's oldest tavern, then move to Puddler's Hall (established 1874), where early union leaders cried out for justice while polishing off their pints. Next up is a bit of gnoshing at the Historic White House Tavern, which stocks every variety of cured meat to ever come out of Germany. The final stop is Holler House, which has the nation's oldest bowling alley in its basement and female patrons' bras dangling from every beam and light fixture. In typical Milwaukee style, the owner, an octogenarian named Marcy, still tends bar and cracks jokes that make sailors blush.

After the tour, continue hydrating at the Pabst Brewery Complex, a 20-acre campus of old cream-brick buildings that constitutes the Midwest's answer to Dublin's more touristed Guinness Storehouse. Pabst hasn't brewed a drop at this location since the company was shut down in 1996 - Blue Ribbon is now made in a half dozen breweries around the country - and the entire 20-acre campus was slated for demolition until a local beer enthusiast swooped in and started buying up pieces of the property.

The renovations are a work in progress, which is part of what makes touring the complex so interesting. First, visitors get a rundown of the brewery's 170-year history in Blue Ribbon Hall while enjoying a Pabst and pretzels. Then guides lead small groups up a creaky staircase and into a giant hall, where sheetrock has just been torn down to reveal amazing original details like Pabst-themed stained glass and intricate wood finishing. Poking around the late Captain Frederick Pabst's office, which is still littered with early-20th-century ledgers, is as fun as try to make sense of the manual for the ventilation system set up to facilitate the beer baron's 10-a-day Cuban cigar habit. After the tour, stop next door to check out - or sleep it off at - the newly renovated Brewhouse Inn and Suites, where the brewery's original copper kettles stand tall in the middle of a five-story atrium.

City of Milwaukee pushes condoms and lube on kids as young as 12 yrs old

Last Thursday WTMJ’s John Mercure revealed a City of Milwaukee bid for over 3 million male and female condoms and 650,000 packages of personal lubricant. The taxpayer funded condoms would range from standard to rainbow colored to extra-sensitive. PLW state director Peggy Hamill joined Mercure on his daily afternoon radio program stating that while liberals tell us to “stay out their bedrooms” and “keep our rosaries off their ovaries,” we pro-lifers are telling them to “keep their perversions out of our pocketbooks.” Please click here to download the audio of the program.

Interestingly, WTMJ published a story in October 2012 explaining that the rapidly declining Milwaukee teen pregnancy rate was due to programs encouraging parents and their teens to “break the silence” and discuss responsible sexual activity. It did not mention publicly funded contraception as a factor. Pro-Life Wisconsin knows that government funded contraception works only to fuel teen sexual activity and consequently underage pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease and chemical and surgical abortion.
