ProLifeWI: Key pro-life bills await passage in State Senate

Bills establishing a “Choose Life” Wisconsin specialty license plate and banning abortion coverage in state employee health plans have passed the Wisconsin State Assembly and now await passage in the State Senate.  It is critical that the State Senate pass these pro-life bills in January and send them to Governor Walker for his expected signature. You can help make this happen!

Assembly Bill (AB) 206, legislation authored by Rep. Andre Jacque (R-De Pere) and Sen. Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin), establishes a “Choose Life” Wisconsin specialty license plate. The “Choose Life” plate will provide a wonderful opportunity for Wisconsinites to express their pro-life beliefs and facilitate and encourage adoption as a positive, life-affirming choice for women with unplanned pregnancies.  Choose Life Wisconsin, Inc. will disburse the proceeds from the sale of the plates to pregnancy care centers throughout the state.

Assembly Bill (AB) 216, legislation authored by Rep. Jacque and Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend), bans abortion coverage in state employee health plans and provides an exemption from the state contraceptive insurance coverage mandate for non-profit religious organizations, religious employers and religious institutions of higher education.  This exemption mirrors the federal exemption for religious entities under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Some stats on marriage's effect on children

It seems Senator Glenn Grothman has stirred up all the politically correct types by introducing a bill that would require a state agency that is concerned with child abuse and neglect to pay attention to the most important cause of that abuse and neglect: family structure.

This reflects on sexual behavior (having children out of wedlock) and liberals are committed to the notion that no sort of sexual behavior should be stigmatized, even if it has nasty social consequences.

But the data are overwhelming. Below is a chart from a report by the Department of Health and Human Services on child abuse and neglect.

Planned Parenthood: Wisconsin has never seen an administration more fundamentally opposed to birth control

You know you're doing something right when HuffPo writes snide editorial remarks as news.

It's important to note, however, that this budget does NOT even come close to defunding Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. It's a step in the right direction, as it eliminates some funding, but it's not a total defunding, like Indiana.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is expected to sign a budget bill on Tuesday [June 28] that eliminates state and federal funding from nine of the state's Planned Parenthood health centers, making Wisconsin the fourth state to defund the family planning provider after Indiana, Kansas and North Carolina did so earlier this year.

The new state budget also cuts men out of BadgerCare, the state's Medicaid-funded family planning program, and tightens the eligibility restrictions for women, which could jeopardize the entire program. The U.S. Department of Health would have to agree to such dramatic changes to BadgerCare that state officials worry the program might end altogether, leaving 57,000 uninsured patients without access to health care.

A Planned Parenthood spokesperson said Wisconsin has never seen an administration more fundamentally opposed to family planning and birth control. Walker was the first gubernatorial candidate to seek and win the official endorsement of Pro-Life Wisconsin -- a group that considers birth control a form of abortion and opposes sex education for teenagers.

Numerous state lawmakers have expressed their disdain for Planned Parenthood.

"There's a very ugly side to this organization, and I regret that they're going to take such a tiny cut in this budget," said state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) during negotiations on the budget.

The new budget eliminates $1 million a year in funding for nine of Wisconsin's 25 Planned Parenthood clinics, which provide low-cost preventative health care to over 12,000 uninsured women in small communities like Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Eau Claire and Kenosha.

In 2010, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin received more than $18 million from federal and state sources. Because of this funding, PPWI was able to utilize its other resources to fund 5,439 abortions in 2009 alone. Even scarier is the fact that, in 2008, PPWI performed 56% less abortions, or 3,053. So, the fact of the matter is that as funding to Planned Parenthood rises, so do the number of abortions it performs.

Sen. Grothman and his colleagues on the Joint Finance Committee voted, on May 18, to cut approximately $2 million of PPWI’s $18 million in public funding. It is important to note that neither Grothman nor his pro-life colleagues intend to stop here. Due to the pro-abortion stewardship of former Gov. [a pro-abortion Catholic] Jim Doyle, the Legislature has a very tangled web to unweave.

In order to better protect life, all public funding for Planned Parenthood must eventually be eliminated. As Sen. Grothman said, “There’s a very ugly side to this organization, and I regret that they’re going to take such a tiny cut in the budget.” Regardless, this effort to cut Planned Parenthood’s funding must be seen as a heroic effort in a long battle to protect life in Wisconsin.
