Catholic Presence in Wisconsin

There are 1.6 million Catholics in five dioceses. Total Wisconsin population 5.4 million.

The Catholic presence in Wisconsin includes:
  • 788 Catholic parishes;
  • 1,864 priests and deacons;
  • 3,973 religious sisters(eek!) and brothers;
  • Catholic churches and agencies across the state that spend tens of millions of dollars annually to provide food, clothing, shelter, day care, eldercare, adoption services, and pregnancy, family and personal counseling to people of all races and religions;
  • 348 Catholic elementary and high schools annually enrolling nearly 68,000 students;
  • Five Catholic newspapers with a combined weekly circulation of over 116,000;
  • Officiating at over 6,600 marriage ceremonies, or about 20% of all marriages, performed in Wisconsin every year;
  • Nine Catholic colleges and universities(....Ummm, can anyone say Land 'o Lakes), enrolling nearly 32,000 students of all ages, races and religions;
  • Over thirty-five Catholic hospitals and numerous clinics and long term care facilities; and
  • Over 600 Catholic cemeteries.
