What I am listening to right now

Gaelic Storm - Bare in the Basin

Well actually I'm listening to the not so distorted album version, but still impressive nonetheless.

Fr Z posted asking about country music, and it got me thinking about secular music which I enjoy from time to time. I posted this:
In non bluegrass(bluegrass really is just a rip off of Irish Gaelic folk music), you really have two main country musics – old country and new country. An easy litmus test is to listen to Hank Williams Sr(old) and Hank Williams Jr(new). To me old country is just boring, but if you are in a group of guys drinking beer that know the words it is enjoyable. Some new country is infected with the rock/drug culture(Hank Jr) but some I like(which probably is best classified as protestant cultural music, ie Carrie Underwood, Josh Turner).
...
If we qualify it as country, my favorite is Johnny Cash(even though he cant really sing). He is the bridge between the old and the new, I think.

I LOVE Irish/Scots music...most of my family is of Anglo/Irish/Scots background...the music aspect is especially prevalent in my mum's side (The Irish/Anglo part)...
My people, from my great-grandma Cunninghams' side, came out of the hills of Tennessee...probably the stronghold of the Irish/Scots musical tradition.
The country music thing is really not MY thing...(Gregorian chant is more my line:<)!) but when I hear the music of the Celtic Women, the Irish Tenors, or the music of Appalachia, I know immediately, probably from the genes and the blood, THAT'S IRISH!

I have had the same experience! If you have time, you should come to La Crosse Irishfest. I think both Scythian and Gaelic Storm will be playing this year(probably the top 2 Irish bands in the country). Not as good as Milwaukee Irishfest but I've been impressed every year. They only sell Irish beer(and quasi-Irish beer). Have you heard of The Priests? Alot like the Irish Tenors except without the abandoning the priesthood for fame and fortune.... They have had concerts on EWTN.
