Three names I've heard tossed around for the next bishop of La Crosse

Bishop William Callahan, OFM
Auxiliary Bishop of Milwaukee

Most Reverend William Patrick Callahan, OFM Conv., born June 17, 1950, is a Conventual Franciscan of the St. Bonaventure Province in Chicago. A Chicago native, he attended St. Mary Minor Seminary in Crystal Lake, Ill., and studied at Junior College, Chicago, before being accepted in the Novitiate of St. Bonaventure at Lake Forest, Ill., where he continued his formation from 1969 to 1970. From 1970 to 1973, he studied at Loyola University, Chicago, earning a bachelor's degree in Radio and Television Communications . He earned his master's of divinity degree from St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto in 1976.

After Rome, Pope Benedict XVI named Callahan an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee on October 30, 2007. He was the first Conventual Franciscan to be named a bishop in the United States. As an auxiliary bishop, Bishop Callahan serves the Church by helping the diocesan bishop in the pastoral and spiritual leadership of a diocese, and by assisting the diocesan bishop in his role as shepherd – through teaching, leading, serving and celebrating the sacraments with the people of the diocese.

Bishop James D. Conley, S.T.L.
Auxiliary Bishop of Denver

The Most Rev. James D. Conley was ordained by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M Cap. as the new auxiliary bishop on May 30, 2008 the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, at Denver’s Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Bishop Conley has chosen as his episcopal motto, “Heart speaks to heart.” As auxiliary bishop, he will assist Archbishop Chaput in the pastoral care of the diocese. He will reside at Mother of God parish in Denver.

Bishop Conley is a native of Overland Park, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City, and a convert to Catholicism. He served as a priest for 23 years before his Episcopal Ordination, including 10 years of service to the Holy Father as an official in the Vatican Congregation for Bishops in Rome. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him auxiliary bishop of Denver on April 10, 2008.

Monsignor Aloysius R. Callaghan, J.C.D.
Rector and Vice President
St Paul Seminary(St Thomas), St. Paul, MN

Monsignor Callaghan was born in Heckscherville, Schuylkill County, the son of the late Aloysius R. Sr. and Genevieve (O'Brien) Callaghan on September 15, 1946.  In 1962 he began preparation for the priesthood at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Philadelphia.  After completing four years of studies he was sent by Bishop Joseph McShea to the Pontifical Roman Seminary and the Lateran University in Rome to complete his training.  Monsignor Callaghan was ordained a priest on December 17, 1971, in Saint Peter's Basilica, Rome, by Cardinal James A. Hickey.

In August 1974, he returned to Rome for graduate studies.  He earned a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Lateran University in 1977.  After returning to the diocese, he was named Secretary to Bishop McShea in August 1977; Adjutant Judicial Vicar of the Tribunal; and member of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission.  He was named a Chaplain of His Holiness with the title of Monsignor on December 15, 1981.

On July 1, 2005, the Most Reverend Harry J. Flynn, Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, appointed Monsignor Callaghan as Rector and Vice President of The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.

I keep going back and forth on this.  I think I am going back on my last post and saying it will not be local Msgr. Gilles and someone from outside the diocese.  I heard these three names as potential replacements.  The bottom two sound excellent but maybe too hot for a small diocese like La Crosse.  Bishop Callahan sounds like a real contender here.   Maybe a Callahan/Gilles swap?  Has anybody else heard any names?

The appointment of Bishop Callahan would not be good. He is to closely tied to Archbishop Weakland and Bishop Sklba. La Crosse does not need someone like that as bishop.

Interesting, I just read this http://www.wisn.com/news/19445098/detail.html where Callahan seems to be unwilling to distance himself from Weakland(actually I created a new post on it). I agree, after reading more, I hope he is not in the running.
