Here is after the altar wreck-o-vation.
Sooo... the $100 question: is that the bishops chair? Is that so he's close enough to fist bump Jesus?
Here's another original from a postcard(link is to Ebay item).
Also thank you to Dad29 for posting this story that I had not heard before.
There are a bunch of interesting things in that Cathedral, beginning with the tombs of the Bishops there. And thank you commenter Steve for the tip on the Chapel at the St. Joseph Orphan Home in Superior. I'm now working on a post.
Perhaps the most interesting item is in the anteroom found on the Epistle side (currently the main entrance.)
There is a statue of the BVM there, which was a gift from the Archbishop of the Diocese which sent Green Bay's first Bishop (and many of its priests.)
The statue--which is absolutely stunning, although not large--was sent as a gift because the Archbishop of that Diocese in Germany could not attend the 100th Anniversary celebration of the Green Bay Diocese.
He explained that he'd 'been suddenly called to another assignment in Rome' and simply could not re-schedule things conveniently.
His name?
Card. Jos. Ratzinger
By the way, the organ in that Cathedral was a gift, reportedly worth around $500K when it was given. It's too big for the church--except to us organist-types, of course.

I stumbled across this site, and I belong to SFX Cathedral, have my whole life. Yes, it's a shame they removed the marble high altar, but they did worse in many places. The First Communion picture dates pre-1959, as you can tell by the stiped look of the pillars. They ripped out the pews, the floor, and changed the look of the place...for the better. They added carrera marble (from Italy) and covered the walls and pillars. The view that has the old altar and communion rail, but marble pillars dates to about 1963-64, just before the major changes. And the most recent one, with green carpeting and ordination has a few changes to it now as well. The cathedra was moved back to its very original place on the left side of the sanctuary, and made permanent. The pulpits are both a beautiful carved wood, plain for announcers side, ornate for the Word side. We also have two angels in adoration in front of the tabernacle.
One correction regarding the tombs...there is only one tomb, containing the remains of the 2nd bishop of Green Bay, Francis Xavier Krautbauer, who is credited with the planning and building of the Cathedral. His tomb is in front of the pews on the right side of church, where it was placed in such a location that anyone who went to Confession would have to walk on/over his tomb, and he hoped that people would remember him and say a prayer for him. Even though the area around him has changed, he is still right in the center of the main entrance into church.
