While visiting the U.S., the Cardinal toured Stevens Point in part because it was a Polish-American city and in part because he had met Dreyfus in Poland a few years before. Lee Dreyfus had been in Poland to help clear up issues over an exchange program between the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He enlisted the Cardinal, also archbishop of Krakow, to help smooth over problems with the communist Polish government that arose when they found out that the dean of the program was Catholic. Dreyfus appears to be wearing the vest in the WHS MuseumWisconsin Historical Society
The photo was taken in 1976. Dreyfus went on to serve as governor of Wisconsin from 79-83.
