Nice find, dude! You can see that the original walls were already being painted over when compared to the 1893 interior photo. What was wrong with people back then?
From the sigh Badger, I'm assuming that's not how it looks today...? It does resemble the Basilica of St. Josaphat here in Milwaukee. The Basilica, in care of the Conventual Franciscans, is where "Fr. Bill" (now Bishop William Callahan) served as pastor for many years before being called to the episcopate.
In his time there he initiated and raised the funds to restore the Basilica to its original beauty...
Let me tell ya GOR, I'd be a happy camper if Bishop Callahan wanted to pursue it. What happened was that they tore this one down and built a completely new contemporary neo-Gothic Cathedral on this site. The new Cathedral is much larger but definitely lost something in the process. We have our 150th anniversary coming up in a few years, so I'm compiling a number of photos and putting together the history for the Cathedral's website.
From what I have learned, it seems to me that the architect Edward Schulte wanted a more traditional design(see his other work around the same time) but then Bishop John Treacy wanted something very modern(for example, Schulte wanted communion rails but Treacy would not allow it).
Steve: I think that the two are actually separate churches, 1893 and 1950. Both were structurally primarily wood so I think that is the main reason for the new church. At the time it was said much of the old church interior would be used in the new church but that did not happen.
