Guadalupe Shrine, Bp Callahan to install first-class relic of St. Peregrine

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin on Tuesday, March 15 at 12:15 p.m. will install a first-class relic of St. Peregrine, patron saint of persons suffering from cancer, following a Holy Mass celebrated by Bishop William Patrick Callahan, Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse. The first-class relic will be installed in a side aisle shrine dedicated to the saint in the Shrine Church. During the Holy Mass public veneration of the relic and the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be offered.

St. Peregrine Laziosi (1260-1345) was born in Forlì, Italy and became a member of the Order of Servants of Mary, or Servites. He was diagnosed with cancer of the leg at the age of 60. On the night before a scheduled amputation of his leg, he experienced a trance-like sleep in which he saw Jesus curing him from the cross. Upon waking, he discovered that his leg was completely healed. St. Peregrine was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII on December 27, 1726. His liturgical feast is celebrated on May 1.

The shrine to St. Peregrine is one of six side aisle shrines in the Shrine Church. The others include St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Blessed Father Miguel Agustin Pro, S.J., St. Gianna Beretta Molla, St. Maria Goretti and St. Faustina Kowalska. The last first-class relic to be installed in the Shrine Church was of St. Gianna Beretta Molla in April 2010.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, faithful to the message of the Blessed Virgin Mary through her appearances on the American continent in 1531, serves the spiritual needs of those who suffer poverty in body and soul. It is a place of ceaseless prayer for the corporal and spiritual welfare of God's children, especially those in most need.
