Pontifical TLM In Washington DC Cancelled: “unable to obtain the necessary permission”

Keep in mind that the Pontifical Mass was to be celebrated in honor of the anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict.  This year will also bring the 60th Jubilee of the Holy Father’s ordination.

It seems the Archdiocese of Washington DC did not want the Mass to be celebrated.

I don’t, however, understand how this meshes with the somewhat independent status of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

That reminds me, recently I asked my pastor if we could have the Traditional Baptism rite for our upcoming baby.  He said he would do the new Rite in Latin, but would never do the Traditional Baptism.  I didn't say there was anything wrong with the current Baptismal formula, just that we read the old form was beautiful and we were curious about it.  For those of you following along at home, much of the Traditional Baptism ritual is permitted to be in English already.  We didn't want the traditional formula because it's in Latin and being all in Latin makes it "more Catholic" or something.  We wanted it because this ritual is our common Catholic heritage with our ancestors.  This story about DC reminded me how irrational this fear is.  I know plenty of other places in this diocese and state that "permit" younger Catholics this shared experience of their grandparents.

I just don't understand the basis for treating those of us attached to the older rites as second class citizens in the Church despite the Holy Father's written and authoritative position on the matter.
