President Obama's Anne Boleyn

James Taranto at Opinion Journal asks why President Barack Obama was willing to shut down the government over taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, provider nationwide of more than a third of a million abortions in 2009 alone.
Answer: Symbolism. The federal money doesn’t actually pay for abortions (those are profitable for PP). The money instead buys a stake in identity politics, Taranto writes.
“Single-issue pro-abortion voters are still a crucial component of the Democratic electoral base. As National Journal reported last week, President Obama is ‘struggling with every other segment of the white electorate, including younger voters,’ with the exception of ‘well-educated white women.’
“His willingness to shut down the government rather than cut funding to Planned Parenthood is a strong show of support to this bloc of voters.”
Meanwhile, Matthew Archbold notices just how almost-open so many people on the left are about the eugenics of abortion.
“Washington Post’s Ezra Klein would seem to agree that perhaps culling the poor might be a swell idea but he caveats it a bit. He wrote just this week, concerning the fight to defund Planned Parenthood:
“The fight also isn’t about cutting spending. The services Planned Parenthood provides save the federal government a lot of money. It’s somewhat cold to put it in these terms, but taxpayers end up bearing a lot of the expense for unintended pregnancies among people without the means to care for their children.
“Somewhat cold? Yeah. Somewhat.”
