Ireland is one of those countries where the RC church's penchant for dictating to civil government has come back to bite it in its institutional rear, as the government now seeks to invade the sanctity of the confessional in its newfound zeal to root out priestly pedophilia.
The Irish government is, in my seldom humble opinion, wrong to do this. Ireland, however, has no First Amendment. In America, although many will be tempted to push the envelope, there IS a wall of separation between church and state. Our experience will show that it is perfectly possible to prosecute crime without demanding that a church commit what is, by its own terms, sacrilege within its own internal processes.
